“Este mandamento nos foi dado por Ele: Quem ama a Deus ama também seu irmão.”
“This commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”
7. Amados, amemo-nos uns aos outros, porque o amor vem de Deus; e todo aquele que ama é nascido de Deus e conhece a Deus.
8. Aquele que não ama não conhece a Deus; porque Deus é amor.
9. Nisto se manifestou o amor de Deus para conosco: em que Deus enviou o seu Filho unigênito ao mundo, para que por meio dele vivamos.
10. Nisto consiste o amor: não em que nós tenhamos amado a Deus, mas em que Ele nos amou.
11. Amados, se Deus nos amou assim, nós também devemos amar uns aos outros.
12. Se nos amarmos uns aos outros, Deus permanece em nós, e o seu amor será aperfeiçoado em nós.
18. No amor não há medo; pelo contrário, o perfeito amor expulsa o medo.
7. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us.
11. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
18. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.
SERMÃO DA LIÇÃO
1 O SENHOR é a minha luz e a minha salvação; a quem temerei?
O SENHOR é a fortaleza da minha vida; de quem me recearei?
5 Pois no dia da angústia ele me esconderá no seu pavilhão; no recôndito do seu tabernáculo me ocultará; sobre uma rocha me elevará.
6 Agora, pois, a minha cabeça será exaltada acima dos meus inimigos, que me cercam; portanto, oferecerei no seu tabernáculo sacrifícios de júbilo; cantarei, sim, cantarei louvores ao Senhor.
11 Ensina-me o teu caminho, ó SENHOR, e guia-me por uma vereda plana, por causa dos meus inimigos.
14 Espere no SENHOR; seja forte e corajoso; espere, pois, no SENHOR.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

11 Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

41 E Esaú odiou Jacó por causa da bênção com que seu pai o abençoara; e Esaú disse em seu coração: Chegarão os dias de luto por meu pai; então matarei meu irmão Jacó.
42 E estas palavras de Esaú, seu filho mais velho, foram contadas a Rebeca; e ela mandou chamar Jacó, seu filho mais novo, e disse-lhe:

41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.
42 And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him,
43 … my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;
3 Então o Senhor disse a Jacó: Volta para a terra de teus pais e para a teus parentes, e eu estarei contigo.
3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

3 E Jacó enviou mensageiros antes de si a Esaú, seu irmão…
6 E os mensageiros voltaram a Jacó, dizendo: Viemos ter com teu irmão Esaú, e ele também veio ao teu encontro, e quatrocentos homens com ele.
7 Então Jacó ficou muito assustado e angustiado:
24 E Jacó ficou sozinho; e lutou com um homem até ao romper do dia.
25 E, vendo que não prevalecia contra ele, tocou-lhe na articulação da coxa; e a articulação da coxa de Jacó deslocou-se, enquanto lutava com ele.
26 E ele disse: Deixai-me ir, pois já rompeu o dia. E ele disse: Não te deixarei ir, a menos que me abençoes.
27 E ele lhe disse: Qual é o teu nome? E ele respondeu: Jacó.
28 E ele disse: Não te chamarás mais Jacó, mas Israel; porque, como príncipe, tens poder com Deus e com os homens, e prevalecestes.
29 Então Jacó lhe perguntou: "Diga-me, por favor, o teu nome". E ele respondeu: "Por que perguntas pelo meu nome?" E ali ele o abençoou.

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed:
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
1 Então Jacó levantou os olhos e olhou, e eis que Esaú vinha, e com ele quatrocentos homens.
3 E, passando diante deles, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra sete vezes, até chegar perto de seu irmão.
4 E Esaú correu ao seu encontro, abraçou-o, lançou-se-lhe ao pescoço e o beijou; e choraram.
1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men.
3 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
23 E Jesus percorria toda a Galileia, ensinando nas sinagogas, pregando o evangelho do reino e curando todo tipo de enfermidades e doenças entre o povo.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
1 Vendo as multidões, Jesus subiu a um monte; e, assentando-se, aproximaram-se dele os seus discípulos.
2 E ele, abrindo a boca, os ensinava, dizendo:
21 Ouvistes que foi dito aos antigos: Não matarás; e quem matar estará sujeito a julgamento.
22 Mas eu vos digo que qualquer que se irar contra seu irmão estará sujeito a julgamento.
23 Portanto, se você trouxer sua oferta ao altar e ali se lembrar de que seu irmão tem algo contra você;
24 Deixe ali a sua oferta diante do altar, e vá primeiro reconciliar-se com o seu irmão, e depois volte e apresente a sua oferta.
43 Ouvistes que foi dito: Amarás o teu próximo e odiarás o teu inimigo.
44 Mas Eu lhes digo: amem os seus inimigos, orem por aqueles que os perseguem e os maltratam.
45 Para que sejais filhos do vosso Pai que está nos céus:
48 Portanto, sejam perfeitos como perfeito é o Pai celestial de vocês.
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
31 E assim como quereis que os homens vos façam, fazei-lhes também vós mesmos.
36 Sede vós, pois, misericordiosos, como também vosso Pai é misericordioso.
37 Não julgueis, e não sereis julgados; não condeneis, e não sereis condenados; perdoai, e sereis perdoados;
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
14 Pois, se perdoardes aos homens as suas ofensas, também vosso Pai celestial vos perdoará a vós;
15 Mas, se vocês não perdoarem aos homens as suas ofensas, o Pai de vocês também não perdoará as ofensas de vocês.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
21 Então Pedro aproximou-se dele e disse: Senhor, quantas vezes deverei perdoar meu irmão quando ele pecar contra mim? Até sete vezes?
22 Disse-lhe Jesus: Eu não te digo até sete vezes, mas até setenta vezes sete.
21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
1 Todo aquele que crê que Jesus é o Cristo, é nascido de Deus;
2 Nisto conhecemos que amamos os filhos de Deus: quando amamos a Deus e guardamos os seus mandamentos.
3 Pois este é o amor de Deus: que guardemos os seus mandamentos; e os seus mandamentos não são penosos.
4 Porque tudo o que é nascido de Deus vence o mundo; e esta é a vitória que vence o mundo: a nossa fé.
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God:
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
O Amor Divino sempre atendeu e sempre atenderá a todas as necessidades humanas.
…para toda a humanidade e em todos os momentos, o Amor divino supre todo o bem.
O milagre da Graça não é milagre para o Amor.
Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.
… to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.
The miracle of grace is no miracle to Love.
As intensas experiências da crença na suposta vida da matéria, bem como nossas decepções e infortúnios incessantes, levam-nos como crianças cansadas aos braços do Amor divino.
Os mortais podem buscar a compreensão da Ciência Cristã, mas não serão capazes de extrair da Ciência Cristã os fatos do Ser, sem o esforço para alcançá-los.
The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love.
Mortals may seek the understanding of Christian Science, but they will not be able to glean from Christian Science the facts of being without striving for them.
Jacó estava sozinho, lutando contra o erro — debatendo-se com uma percepção mortal da vida, da substância e da inteligência como existentes na matéria, com seus falsos prazeres e dores — quando um anjo, uma mensagem da Verdade e do Amor, apareceu para ele e atingiu o cerne, ou a força, do seu erro, até que ele visse a sua irrealidade; e a Verdade, sendo assim compreendida, deu-lhe força espiritual neste Peniel da Ciência divina.
Então disse o evangelho espiritual: "Deixe-me ir, pois o dia está amanhecendo"; isto é, a luz da Verdade e do Amor desponta sobre você. Mas o patriarca, percebendo o seu erro e a sua necessidade de ajuda, não soltou essa luz gloriosa até que a sua natureza fosse transformada. Quando perguntou a Jacó: "Qual é o seu nome?", ele respondeu imediatamente; e então o seu nome foi mudado para Israel, pois "como um príncipe" ele havia prevalecido e tinha "poder com Deus e com os homens". Então Jacó questionou o seu libertador: "Diga-me, por favor, o seu nome;" Mas essa designação foi omitida, pois o mensageiro não era um ser corpóreo, mas uma transmissão incorpórea e sem nome do Amor divino ao homem, que, para usar a palavra do Salmista, restaurou sua Alma — deu-lhe o sentido espiritual do ser e repreendeu seu sentido material.
Assim se manifestou o resultado da luta de Jacó. Ele havia vencido o erro material com a compreensão do Espírito e do poder espiritual. Isso transformou o homem. Ele não era mais chamado de Jacó, mas de Israel — um príncipe de Deus, ou um soldado de Deus, que havia lutado o bom combate.
Jacob was alone, wrestling with error, — struggling with a mortal sense of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter with its false pleasures and pains, — when an angel, a message from Truth and Love, appeared to him and smote the sinew, or strength, of his error, till he saw its unreality; and Truth, being thereby understood, gave him spiritual strength in this Peniel of divine Science. Then said the spiritual evangel: "Let me go, for the day breaketh;" that is, the light of Truth and Love dawns upon thee. But the patriarch, perceiving his error and his need of help, did not loosen his hold upon this glorious light until his nature was transformed. When Jacob was asked, "What is thy name?" he straightway answered; and then his name was changed to Israel, for "as a prince" had he prevailed and had "power with God and with men." Then Jacob questioned his deliverer, "Tell me, I pray thee, thy name;" but this appellation was withheld, for the messenger was not a corporeal being, but a nameless, incorporeal impartation of divine Love to man, which, to use the word of the Psalmist, restored his Soul, — gave him the spiritual sense of being and rebuked his material sense.
The result of Jacob's struggle thus appeared. He had conquered material error with the understanding of Spirit and of spiritual power. This changed the man. He was no longer called Jacob, but Israel, — a prince of God, or a soldier of God, who had fought a good fight.
Cada provação da nossa fé em Deus nos fortalece. Quanto mais difícil parecer a condição material, mais difícil deve ser superada pelo Espírito, mais forte deve ser a nossa fé e mais puro o nosso amor. O apóstolo João diz: "No amor não há medo; pelo contrário, o perfeito amor expulsa o medo. [...] Aquele que tem medo não está aperfeiçoado no amor."
Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love. The Apostle John says: "There is no fear in Love, but perfect Love casteth out fear. ... He that feareth is not made perfect in Love."
Em todos os momentos e em todas as circunstâncias, vença o mal com o bem. Conhece-te a ti mesmo, e Deus te dará a sabedoria e a oportunidade para a vitória sobre o mal. Revestido com a armadura do Amor, o ódio humano não poderá te alcançar.
At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.
O que mais precisamos é a oração com um desejo fervoroso de crescimento na Graça, expressa em paciência, mansidão, amor e boas obras. Guardar os mandamentos do nosso Mestre e seguir o seu exemplo é a nossa verdadeira dívida para com ele e a única prova digna da nossa gratidão por tudo o que ele fez. A adoração exterior, por si só, não é suficiente para expressar uma gratidão leal e sincera, pois ele disse: "Se me amardes, guardareis os meus mandamentos".
A luta constante para sermos sempre bons é uma oração incessante. Seus motivos se manifestam nas bênçãos que trazem — bênçãos que, mesmo que não sejam expressas em palavras audíveis, atestam nossa dignidade de sermos participantes do Amor.
O simples pedido de que possamos amar a Deus nunca fará com que o amemos; mas o anseio de sermos melhores e mais santos, expresso na vigilância diária e no esforço para assimilar mais do caráter divino, nos moldará e nos transformará, até que despertemos à Sua semelhança.
What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds. To keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done. Outward worship is not of itself sufficient to express loyal and heartfelt gratitude, since he has said: "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer. Its motives are made manifest in the blessings they bring, — blessings which, even if not acknowledged in audible words, attest our worthiness to be partakers of Love.
Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness.
O amor-próprio é mais opaco do que um corpo sólido. Em paciente obediência a um Deus paciente, esforcemo-nos para dissolver, com o solvente universal do Amor, o inflexível do erro — a vontade própria, a autojustificação e o amor-próprio — que guerreiam contra a espiritualidade e é a lei do pecado e da morte.
Self-love is more opaque than a solid body. In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error, — self-will, self-justification, and self-love, — which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death.
Se o egoísmo der lugar à bondade, trataremos nosso próximo de forma altruísta e abençoaremos aqueles que nos amaldiçoam; mas jamais cumpriremos esse grande dever simplesmente pedindo que seja feito. Há uma cruz a ser carregada antes que possamos desfrutar da plenitude de nossa esperança e fé.
If selfishness has given place to kindness, we shall regard our neighbor unselfishly, and bless them that curse us; but we shall never meet this great duty simply by asking that it may be done. There is a cross to be taken up before we can enjoy the fruition of our hope and faith.
O grande milagre, para os sentidos humanos, é o Amor divino, e a grande necessidade da existência é alcançar a verdadeira noção do que constitui o reino dos céus no homem. Esse objetivo jamais será atingido enquanto odiarmos o nosso próximo ou tivermos uma opinião errônea sobre qualquer pessoa que Deus tenha designado para proclamar a Sua Palavra.
The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love, and the grand necessity of existence is to gain the true idea of what constitutes the kingdom of heaven in man. This goal is never reached while we hate our neighbor or entertain a false estimate of anyone whom God has appointed to voice His Word.
A Ciência Cristã ordena ao homem que domine as propensões —mantenha o ódio em suspenso com a bondade, que vença a luxúria com castidade, a vingança com caridade e que supere a falsidade com honestidade. Sufoque esses erros em seus estágios iniciais, se você não quizer acalentar um exército de conspiradores contra a saúde, a felicidade e o sucesso.
Christian Science commands man to master the propensities, — to hold hatred in abeyance with kindness, to conquer lust with chastity, revenge with charity, and to overcome deceit with honesty. Choke these errors in their early stages, if you would not cherish an army of conspirators against health, happiness, and success.
Se tivermos triunfado o suficiente sobre os erros dos sentidos materiais para permitir que a Alma assuma o controle, detestaremos o pecado e o repreenderemos sob todas as suas máscaras. Só assim poderemos abençoar nossos inimigos, possam não interpretar assim nossas palavras.
If we have triumphed sufficiently over the errors of material sense to allow Soul to hold the control, we shall loathe sin and rebuke it under every mask. Only in this way can we bless our enemies, though they may not so construe our words.
O amor a Deus e ao próximo é o verdadeiro incentivo tanto na cura quanto no ensino. O amor inspira, ilumina, designa e mostra o caminho. Os motivos corretos dão força ao pensamento, e força e liberdade à fala e à ação. O amor é sacerdotisa no altar da Verdade. Espere pacientemente que o Amor divino se mova sobre as águas da mente mortal e forme o conceito perfeito.
Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching. Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action. Love is priestess at the altar of Truth. Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.
Será dever de cada membro desta Igreja orar todos os dias: "Venha o Teu reino"; que o reinado da Verdade, da Vida e do Amor divinos se estabeleça em mim e expulse de mim todo pecado; e que a Tua Palavra enriqueça os afetos de toda a humanidade e os governe! — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 4
Nem a animosidade nem o mero apego pessoal devem impelir os motivos ou atos dos membros da Igreja Mãe. Na Ciência, somente o Amor divino governa o homem; e um Cientista Cristão reflete as doces comodidades do Amor, repreendendo o pecado, na verdadeira fraternidade, caridade e perdão. Os membros desta Igreja devem vigiar e orar diariamente para serem libertos de todo mal, de profetizar, julgar, condenar, aconselhar, influenciar ou serem influenciados erroneamente. — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 1
Será dever de cada membro desta Igreja defender-se diariamente contra a sugestão mental agressiva, e não ser levado a esquecer ou negligenciar seu dever para com Deus, seu líder e a humanidade. Por suas obras, ele será julgado — e justificado ou condenado. — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 6.
