Obediência

Em sua Mensagem à Igreja Mãe para 1900 (p. 8), nossa Líder aconselha: “Aprendam a obedecer; mas primeiro aprendam o que é obediência”. Para o Cientista Cristão, a obediência não é mais a adoração cega de uma divindade desconhecida ou o seguimento idólatra de uma figura exaltada; a submissão servil nasce do medo e da ignorância ou a submissão forçada pelas circunstâncias ou pelo ambiente à opinião humana de outrem. Significa, antes, a adesão resoluta e inabalável em pensamento e ação à lei de Deus, lei essa que se tem chegar a compreender, e assim apreender como a única lei que é correta e natural para ele obedecer. Viver nessa obediência a Deus é o único status legítimo e individualidade do homem.
Quando a lei de Deus é desobedecida por ignorância ou intencionalmente, surge o pecado, cujos resultados são tristeza, doença e morte. A questão é clara. Cada indivíduo pode escolher as bênçãos da obediência — saúde, felicidade, paz — ou os tormentos do sofrimento, a consequência inevitável da desobediência. É certo que todos devem, aqui ou na vida futura, entrar em amorosa harmonia com a lei de Deus, seja pelo caminho direto da obediência voluntária ou pelo caminho mais árduo e longo que, começando com a desobediência, leva através do inferno da mortalidade até que, flagelado pelo sofrimento, o homem mortal desperte e se volte para a lei da Verdade.
A obediência se baseia e se expressa através daquele estado de pensamento que compreende a unidade espiritual de Deus e do homem. A ignorância de Deus impede a obediência nEle. Deus é ilimitado, eterno, a Mente ou inteligência sempre presente, a única Vida manifestada por toda a Sua criação. O conceito científico do homem mostra que ele é a ideia, ou imagem, de Deus. Através da revelação mais completa da Ciência do Ser, que chegou ao mundo com a descoberta da Ciência Cristã por Mary Baker Eddy, este conceito bíblico do ser humano se esclarece ao desdobrar o pensamento do homem como reflexo ou expressão de Deus.
A palavra reflexo, de fato, contribui muito para mostrar à humanidade como o homem real se torna imediatamente um com Deus em cada pensamento e ação. Basta observar seu reflexo e sua perfeita correspondência com o original em qualidade e movimento para obter alguma noção da perfeita harmonia com a Divindade, que o homem espiritual expressa como o reflexo do Espírito, Deus.
O homem, portanto, é para Deus o que o reflexo é para o seu original, e deve manifestar, em qualidade, ação, pensamento e caráter, completa unidade com a única Vida. Visto como reflexo, a obediência do homem a Deus, ou seja, sua consonância com Deus, torna-se inevitável. Quando o homem entender-se como ideia, expressão ou reflexo de Deus, reconhecendo sua completa dependência e obediência natural a Deus, o Espírito, e se torna claro o fato espiritual de que a ordem e o estado do seu ser devem necessariamente ser predestinados para sempre somente em Deus. Deus é a única causa que existe. Não há outra causa à qual o homem possa prestar lealdade. Separado de Deus, a única causa criadora, ou vivendo em desobediência a Ele, o homem deixaria de ter um status legítimo e abandonaria seu lugar de direito no universo — seu destino marcado como um enigma inexplicável.
Assim como o raio alegre emana do sol, expressando e refletindo sem a hesitação ou o questionamento as características de sua origem, assim também o homem espiritual, radiante e cheio de vida, inteligência e amor, sendo fruto e manifestação de Deus, para sempre segue incondicionalmente à sua causa e princípio eternos.
Obedecer é tão natural para ele quanto ser. De fato, ele só pode verdadeiramente ser enquanto obedece à lei divina. Nenhuma sensação de trabalho, estresse ou fardo acompanha a obediência do homem a Deus; pois, sendo a ordem natural de sua vida, é espontânea, feliz e livre. A alegria — alegria genuína, sem pecado — vem com a obediência. Sem obediência a Deus, a verdadeira vida jamais é encontrada, a verdadeira riqueza jamais é conquistada.
A desobediência é a negação da função natural do homem. Não faz parte do homem porque não é de Deus, cujo o homem é reflexo. A desobediência é uma crença ilegítima fora da Mente, e, portanto, é sem vida e inexistente. Não há nada no universo de Deus que justifique pensar em desobediência. É impensável; mas na mente humana ou mortal, a obediência à lei de Deus é uma questão irrelevante, pois a mente carnal só pode ser levada a renunciar ao seus “outros” deuses”, deuses da desobediência, na proporção em que estes são substituídos pela compreensão do único Deus e de Sua ideia, o homem.
A consciência humana individual é o campo de batalha onde as forças do bem e do mal se encontram em combate, e aqui existência espiritual individual e universal deve ser demonstrada através de um crescimento gradual na compreensão e obediência a Deus. Isso só será possível por meio de um esforço individual consagrado podendo assim refutar e banir o pecado e o ódio do pensamento da humanidade, curar as doenças e trazer a paz à Terra.
A crença em uma individualidade material é ladra e usurpadora, e logo cativa a atenção daquele em cujo pensamento manifesta o desejo correto de obedecer a Deus. Bem enraizada e consagrada pelo tempo, busca com persistência, sutileza e astúcia para enganar, frustrar e acorrentar à terra aquele que busca um sentido mais elevado de vida e existência.
Padrões e hábitos de pensamento aceitos, dogmas médicos e teológicos, o ambiente mortal, os laços da carne, interesses pessoais, a vontade própria, o amor-próprio, todos se rebelam diante dos sinais da regeneração que chega no pensamento humano, que os condena ao esquecimento. Junto com seus antepassados da época de Jesus, clamam: “Deixem-nos em paz”. Somente aquele cuja honestidade não admite concessões pode obedecer a Deus.
Com a disposição de deixar a Verdade revelar e destruir completamente todo pecado oculto, toda intriga com o mal, todo desejo errado, toda ambição mortal, todo sentimento obstinado, deve caracterizar a entrega incondicional do eu mortal na busca pelo verdadeiro Eu do homem. Todo pensamento — e não há reservas — deve ser submetido à obediência a Deus, a única Mente.
Aquele que desonestamente encobre seus pecados de desobediência, alimenta a vontade própria ou tolera a corrupção oculta, dá rédea solta ao mal, desonra a Deus, engana a si mesmo e constrói a pira para sua própria destruição.
A Ciência Cristã mostra ao homem o objetivo da imortalidade e o único caminho para alcançá-la. Mostra-lhe que aquilo que o senso humano, porventura, denomina seu dever mais árduo, ou seja, a obediência a Deus, é na verdade seu maior privilégio. Dever e privilégio, ele aprende, caminham juntos; e o dever alegremente reconhecido e vivido é uma honra conquistada por aquele que escuta e obedece. Todas as murmurações do senso mortal — sugestões mentais —, a rebeldia interior, a resistência obstinada, a relutância inexplicável, as apreensões, dúvidas, medos e hesitações quanto a se ele deveria, naquele momento, obedecer a Deus incondicionalmente, tudo precisa ser reconhecido como os cantos de sereia do mal que buscam impedir o progresso do homem rumo à Verdade.
O grau de obediência do homem a Deus é um indicador preciso de sua compreensão da Ciência Cristã. A falta disso — de sua sinceridade, sua honestidade, sua humildade, seu amor por Deus e pelo homem. A obstinação e a desobediência marcam um homem como insubordinado a Deus e subordinado ao diabo, ao mal. Somente pela obediência inabalável e pela entrega total que caracterizaram toda a trajetória terrena do nosso Guia e que se tornaram o ápice no teste supremo em Getsêmani. Nas palavras “Não a minha vontade, mas a Tua seja feita”, Jesus alcançou esse senso celestial de… Deus, que lhe conferiu um domínio exaltado sobre toda crença terrena de desobediência e o capacitou a rasgar o véu da mortalidade e mostrar para sempre, àqueles que estão prontos para ver e ouvir, a capacidade do homem, no presente, de obedecer, refletir, estar em comunhão com Deus e, assim, expressá-Lo individualmente e utilizar Seu poder ilimitado.
Quando o indivíduo, iluminado em certa medida pela compreensão espiritual, apreende a importância da obediência no que diz respeito ao progresso humano, ele vislumbra o único caminho para o céu, a harmonia. Um Cientista Cristão se alegra diariamente em obedecer a Deus, pois sabe que somente assim ele poderá encontrar e ocupar seu lugar no universo, exemplificar a Deus e abençoar a humanidade, e alcançar as dádivas inestimáveis do Amor divino.
Se o orgulho desmedido, o egoísmo, os sentidos físicos, a política mundana ou qualquer um dos falsos deuses dos sentidos materiais o impelirem a curvar-se e adorá-los por mais um pouco, ele precisa saber que, nesse exato momento, surge uma oportunidade de ouro para se aproximar do céu por meio da obediência a Deus.
Ele aprende que o mal costuma tirar proveito das fraquezas humanas, a se apresentar de maneiras astutas, a vantagem temporal como mais prática do que o ganho eterno, a facilidade presente como preferível a um conflito moral, o caminho da vontade própria delineado para satisfazer a fantasia mortal como mais desejável do que o caminho ainda invisível de Deus. Mas, por meio do pensamento correto, aquele pensamento que verdadeiramente compreende a Deus, o Cientista Cristão lança sobre esses argumentos a luz da inteligência divina, que expõe suas naturezas falsa e negativas,relegando-as ao esquecimento.
Por meio do conhecimento espiritual afirmativo, em vez da crença material negativa, ele expulsa esses argumentos malignos para o deserto da crença falsa e, com a humildade que nasce de sua compreensão da união do homem com Deus, ele se afasta das exigências da Terra e, com alegria, contentamento e de todo o coração, submete-se em obediência, em pensamento e ação, Àquele por quem e para quem são todas as coisas para sempre. Assim, ele firma seus pés no caminho para o céu e inicia a jornada rumo ao ápice do ser celestial, a demonstração de sua verdadeira identidade, sua filiação com o eterno Deus Pai-Mãe.
Na página 340 de “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras”, nosso Líder escreve: “Este texto do livro de Eclesiastes transmite o pensamento da Ciência Cristã, especialmente quando a palavra ‘dever’, que não está no original, é omitida: ‘Ouçamos a conclusão de tudo: Tema a Deus e guarde os seus mandamentos; porque este é o dever de todo homem.'” Em outras palavras: Ouçamos a conclusão de toda a questão: ame a Deus e guarde os Seus mandamentos; pois isso é tudo o que o homem deve ser, feito à Sua imagem e semelhança.

Obedience

In her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 8) our Leader counsels, “Learn to obey; but learn first what obedience is.” To the Christian Scientist no longer does obedience mean the blind worship of an unknown Deity or the idolatrous following of an exalted personage; the slavish submission born of fear and ignorance or the submission by force of circumstance or environment to another’s human opinion. Rather does it mean resolute and unwavering adherence in thought and deed to the law of God, which law one has come to understand, and so apprehends as the one law which it is right and natural for him to obey. To live in obedience to the law of God constitutes the only legitimate status and individuality of man.
When God’s law is ignorantly or willfully disobeyed sin appears, the results of which are sorrow, sickness, death. The issue is plain. Every individual may choose the blessings of obedience,—health, happiness, peace,—or the throes of suffering, the inevitable consequence of disobedience. Certain it is that all must, here or hereafter, come into loving accord with the law of God, be the way of approach by the direct road of willing obedience or by the rougher and longer way which, beginning with disobedience, leads through the hell of mortality until, scourged with suffering, mortal man is awakened and turned to Truth’s law.
Obedience is predicated upon and expressed through that state of thought which understands the spiritual oneness of God and man. Ignorance of God precludes obedience to Him. God is limitless, eternal, ever present Mind or intelligence, the one Life made manifest by all His creation. The scientific concept of man shows him to be the idea, or image, of God. Through the fuller revelation of the Science of being, which has come to the world in the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, this Biblical concept of man is clarified by unfolding the thought of man as the reflection or expression of God.
The word reflection is indeed doing much to show mankind how immediately the real man is one with God in every thought and act. One needs but to observe his mirrored reflection and its perfect correspondence with the original in quality and movement in order to get some concept of the perfect agreement with Deity which spiritual man expresses as the reflection of Spirit, God.
Man, then, is to God what the reflection is to its original, and he must manifest in quality, action, thought, and character, complete unity with the one Life. Discerned as reflection, man’s obedience to God, or in other words his being in accord with God, is shown to be inevitable. When man is thus understood as God’s idea, expression, or reflection, his complete dependence upon and natural obedience to God, Spirit, is recognized, and the spiritual fact that the order and state of his being must necessarily be forever predestined by God alone is made clear. God is the only cause there is. No other cause exists to which man may yield allegiance. Separated from or living in disobedience to God, the only creative cause, man would cease to have a legitimate status and would abandon his rightful place in the universe—his destiny marked as an inexplicable enigma.
As the gladsome ray comes forth from the sun, expressing and reflecting without hesitation or question the characteristics of its source, so spiritual man, radiant and aglow with life, intelligence, and love, being the outcome and manifestation of God, forever yields unquestioned obedience to his eternal cause and Principle.
To obey is as natural for him as to be. Indeed, he can truly be only as he obeys the divine law. No sense of labor, stress, or burden accompanies man’s obedience to God; for since it is the natural order of his living, it is spontaneous, happy, and free. Joy—genuine, sinless joy—comes with obedience. Without obedience to God true life is never found, real wealth is never gained.
Disobedience is the negation or denial of man’s natural function. It is no part of man because it is not of God, whose reflection man is. Disobedience is an illegitimate belief outside of Mind, and so is lifeless and nonexistent. There is nothing in God’s universe to think disobedience. It is unthinkable; but in the human or mortal mind, obedience to God’s law is a mooted question, for the carnal mind can only be made to yield up its “other gods,” gods of disobedience, in the proportion that these are displaced by an understanding of the one God and His idea, man.
The individual human consciousness is the battle ground where the forces of good and evil meet in combat, and here must the fact of individual and universal spiritual being be demonstrated through a gradual growth in the understanding of and obedience to God. Only by consecrated individual endeavor can sin and hate be refuted and banished from the thought of mankind, sickness be healed, and peace be brought to earth.
The belief in a material selfhood is a thief and usurper, and soon engages the attention of him in whose thought there appears the right desire to yield obedience to God. Well intrenched and time-honored, it seeks with persistency, subtlety, and cunning to deceive, thwart, and chain to earth the seeker for a higher sense of life and being.
Accepted standards and habits of thought, medical and theological dogma, mortal environs, the ties of the flesh, personal interest, self-will, self-love, all rebel at the signs of that coming regeneration in human thought which consigns them to oblivion. With their forbears of Jesus’ time they cry, “Let us alone.” Only he whose honesty admits of no compromise can be obedient to God.
Willingness to let Truth uncover and utterly destroy every hidden sin, every intrigue with evil, every wrong desire, every mortal ambition, every willful sense, must characterize the unconditional surrender of mortal self in the quest for man’s real self. Every thought—and there is no reservation—must be brought into obedience to God, the only Mind.
He who would dishonestly cover his sins of disobedience, nurture self-will, or tolerate hidden corruption, gives rein to evil, dishonors God, deceives himself, and builds the pyre for his own destruction.
Christian Science shows man the goal of imperishable being and the only way thereto. It shows him that what human sense, perchance, denominates his hardest duty, namely, obedience to God, is indeed his highest privilege. Duty and privilege, he learns, go hand in hand; and duty joyfully recognized and lived up to is honor won for him who listens and obeys. All the grumblings of mortal sense,—mental suggestion,—the inward rebellion, the stubborn resistance, the unexplained reluctance, the misgivings, doubts, fears, and vacillations as to whether he should just now uncompromisingly obey God, all need to be recognized as the sirens of evil seeking to hinder man’s progress Truthward. The degree of man’s obedience to God is a certain index of his understanding of Christian Science,—or the lack of it,—of his sincerity, his honesty, his humility, his love for God and man. Self-will and disobedience mark a man as insubordinate to God and subordinate to the devil, evil. Only by the unwavering obedience and self-surrender which characterized the Way-shower’s entire earthly career and became epitomized at the supreme test in Gethsemane in the words, “Not my will, but thine, be done,” did Jesus gain that heaven-born sense of God which brought to him exalted dominion over every earthly woe-belief of disobedience, and enabled him to rend the veil of mortality and show for all time, to those ready to see and hear, man’s ability presently to obey, reflect, be at one with God, and thereby individually to express Him and utilize His limitless power.
When the individual, enlightened in some measure by spiritual understanding, grasps the import of obedience as it pertains to human progress, he has glimpsed the one way to heaven, harmony. A Christian Scientist rejoices daily in obeying God, for he knows that only by so doing can he find and fill his place in the universe, exemplify God, bless mankind, and gain the priceless bestowals of divine Love.
If clamoring pride, selfishness, physical sense, worldly policy, or any of the false gods of material sense bid him bow down and worship them a little longer, he needs to know that then and there is a golden opportunity to rise nearer heaven through obedience to God.
He learns that evil is wont to make capital out of human weaknesses, to picture in cunning ways temporal advantage as more practical than eternal gain, present ease as preferable to a moral conflict, the way of self-will outlined to suit mortal fancy as more to be desired than the yet unseen way of God. But through right thinking, that thinking which truly understands God, the Christian Scientist sheds on these arguments the light of divine intelligence, which exposes their false and negative nature and consigns them to oblivion.
By affirmative spiritual knowing in place of negative material believing he drives these evil arguments into the desert realm of false belief and, with humility born of his understanding of man’s at-one-ment with God, he turns from the claims of earth, and joyfully, cheerfully, whole-heartedly yields obedience in thought and act to Him by whom and to whom are all things forever. Thus does he plant his feet in the path to heaven and begin the journey to the summit of celestial being, the demonstration of his true selfhood, his sonship with the eternal Father-Mother God.
On page 340 of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” our Leader writes: “This text in the book of Ecclesiastes conveys the Christian Science thought, especially when the word duty, which is not in the original, is omitted: ‘Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.’ In other words: Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: love God and keep His commandments: for this is the whole of man in His image and likeness.”
