Como Destruir o Mal – trecho

Agora, comecemos a considerar o método pelo qual aplicamos a Ciência Cristã para promover a destruição do mal. Não podemos nos erguer da terra por nossos próprios esforços. Para nos elevarmos do chão, precisamos nos apegar a algo superior a nós mesmos. Portanto, para nos libertarmos do mal e da mortalidade, devemos nos apegar a algo superior, um sentido mais elevado de vida e existência, e esse sentido é o sentido espiritual ou divino do ser.
Primeiramente, lembre-se sempre de que toda alegação de maldade deve ser reduzida a um argumento mental, uma sugestão da mente carnal ou mortal. “O erro fundamental é a mente mortal”, escreve Mary Baker Eddy na página 405 de Ciência e Saúde. Se quisermos nos livrar de uma árvore que exala odores venenosos, não tentaremos combater o odor. Buscaremos a raiz e a atacaremos. Se quisermos nos livrar do mal, não nos preocupamos muito com seus argumentos específicos, vamos à raiz de tudo e a atacamos. Se, então, reduzirmos o mal que nos confronta a um argumento mental com a mente carnal como sua causa, o que vem a seguir? Como nos livramos dessa causa errônea? Como nos livramos de uma sombra?
Uma sombra nada mais é do que a ausência de luz. Para nos livrarmos dela, deixamos a luz entrar. Então, não há sombra. A Ciência Cristã demonstra que o mal não é um fato da existência, mas apenas um pensamento ilusório, o oposto do fato. Assim, em vez de uma percepção equivocada do mal, voltemo-nos para Deus, que é luz, ou inteligência, e compreendamos que Ele é a única Mente, a única Verdade, a única Vida e o único Amor; que não há outra Mente, e que a suposta mente maligna não é Mente, Substância ou Realidade, e não se pode influenciar, afetar ou controlar Deus ou Sua criação harmoniosa, incluindo o homem.
Em segundo lugar, observe isto: a única maneira de destruirmos uma mentira é deixando de acreditar nela. Da mesma forma, destruímos o mal quando deixamos de acreditar nele. Só deixamos de acreditar nele quando percebemos a substancialidade do Bem e a presença e o poder de Deus. Só percebemos a presença e o poder de Deus quando nos esforçamos, momento a momento, dia a dia, sim, pensamento a pensamento, para pensar os pensamentos de Deus. Raios de luz dissipam a escuridão, gotas de água apagam o fogo, pensamentos de Deus, o bem, anulam o mal. Não há outro caminho.
A Ciência Cristã demonstra que o mal nada mais é do que um estado negativo de pensamento. É como a ignorância. Todos podemos ver que, na realidade, não existe ignorância. A ignorância nada mais é do que um estado negativo de pensamento, a ausência de algo; e desaparece quando a inteligência surge. Assim, cada fase do mal nada mais é do que uma fase de ignorância espiritual, uma ausência da compreensão do bem, da Verdade espiritual afirmativa do ser, e desaparece diante da luz da inteligência espiritual como a escuridão foge diante da aurora.
Em Porto Rico, quando a lua está cheia, as sombras das palmeiras parecem tão negras e substanciais que um forasteiro pularia por cima como se fossem objetos reais. No entanto, elas nunca passam de sombras sem substância. O que o forasteiro precisa fazer é mudar sua percepção sobre elas. Ele precisa aprender que são apenas sombras e totalmente incapazes de impedir seu progresso. Assim também acontece com as sombras das crenças malignas. Elas não são substanciais e não podem impedir nosso progresso quando compreendemos sua natureza negativa.

How to Destroy Evil
Now, let us begin the consideration of the method by which we apply Christian Science to work the destruction of evil. We cannot lift ourselves from the earth by our own bootstraps. To raise ourselves from the ground we need to get hold of something higher than we are. So to get free from evil and mortality we must lay hold of something higher, a higher sense of life and existence, and that sense is the spiritual or God-appointed sense of being.
First, remember always that every claim of evil must be reduced to a mental argument, a suggestion of the carnal, or mortal mind. “The basic error is mortal mind,” writes Mrs. Eddy on page 405 of Science and Health. If we wish to be rid of a tree that is sending out poisonous odors we would not try to combat the odor. We would search out the root and strike there. If we wish to be rid of evil, we do not bother too much with its particular arguments, we go to the root of it all and strike there. If then we reduce the evil that confronts us to a mental argument with the carnal mind as its cause, what next? How do we get rid of this erroneous cause? How do we get rid of a shadow?
A shadow is but the absence of light. To get rid of it we let in the light. Then there is no shadow. Christian Science shows that evil is not the fact of existence, only a shadow thought, the opposite of the fact. So in place of a mistaken evil sense, we turn to God, who is light, or intelligence, and realize that He is the only Mind, the only Truth, the only Life, and the only Love; that there is no other Mind, and that the supposed evil mind is not Mind, substance, or reality and cannot influence, affect, or control God or His harmonious creation, including man.
Now, secondly, please note this. The only way we destroy a lie is by ceasing to believe in it. Likewise we destroy evil as we cease to believe in it. We only cease to believe it is as we realize the substantiality of good and the presence and the power of God. We only realize the presence and power of God as we strive, moment by moment, day by day, yes, thought by thought, to think the thoughts of God. Rays of light displace darkness, drops of water put out fire, thoughts of God, good, nullify evil. There is no other way.
Christian Science shows evil to be nothing but a negative state of thought. It is like ignorance. We can all see there is no such thing in reality as ignorance. Ignorance is but a negative state of thought, the absence of something; and it disappears when intelligence appears. So every phase of evil is but a phase of spiritual ignorance, an absence of the understanding of good, the affirmative, spiritual Truth of being, and it disappears before the light of spiritual intelligence as the darkness flees before the dawn.
In Porto Rico when the moon is full the shadows of the palm trees seem so black and substantial that a stranger will step over them, as he would over some real object. Yet they are never anything but substanceless shadows. What the stranger needs to do is to change his sense about them. He must learn that they are but shadows and wholly unable to hinder his progress. So it is with the shadows of evil belief. They are not substantial and cannot hinder our progress when we learn of their negative nature.
