Introdução

A descobridora e fundadora da Ciência Cristã, Mary Baker Eddy, escreveu na página 428 de Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras, o livro-texto da Ciência Cristã, esta importante declaração: “Devemos reconhecer a capacidade do poder mental de neutralizar as concepções errôneas humanas e substituí-las pela vida espiritual, não a material”. A Ciência Cristã mostra aos homens como utilizar o poder mental, ou o poder de Deus, para destruir o pecado, curar doenças e compreender a vida eterna. Sua mensagem é, portanto, uma mensagem de cura e amor. Ela vem para falar da bondade e do amor de Deus e para mostrar como você e eu podemos nos beneficiar disso imediatamente.

Começarei a palestra contando-lhes sobre uma cura que recentemente chegou ao meu conhecimento, uma cura que é um bom exemplo do que está acontecendo onde quer que a Ciência Cristã seja estudada e fielmente aplicada. Uma senhora que morava em Indiana começou a ter problemas pulmonares em 1917. Seu estado piorou progressivamente até que, no outono de 1918, ela foi obrigada a abandonar suas tarefas domésticas e se internar em um sanatório, onde foi colocada na ala de tuberculosos. Ela continuou recebendo cuidados médicos até o final de 1919, e todos os médicos que diagnosticaram seu problema concordaram que ela tinha tuberculose em estágio avançado. Declararam que ela não tinha mais do que um ano de vida. Na primavera de 1920, ela foi para Utah, na esperança de que o clima lhe fizesse bem. Ela ficou confinada à cama e não conseguia fazer nenhum esforço sem que isso lhe provocasse hemorragias graves. Enquanto estava nessa condição, uma vizinha lhe deixou um exemplar de Ciência e Saúde, explicando brevemente os ensinamentos fundamentais da Ciência Cristã. Por alguns dias, o livro permaneceu fechado. Ela tinha pouca fé de que algo pudesse curá-la. A senhora perguntou ao marido se ele acreditava que o livro a ajudaria. Ele disse que não sabia nada a respeito, mas que Cristo Jesus havia curado sem remédios muitos anos antes. Ela começou a ler e a refletir sobre aquele pequeno livro. Sua força retornou com uma rapidez surpreendente e, em menos de uma semana, ela já conseguia sair da cama e retomar suas tarefas domésticas. Em um mês, todos os sintomas da doença haviam desaparecido, para nunca mais reaparecer. Recentemente, essa senhora se submeteu a um exame médico completo e nenhum vestígio da doença foi encontrado.

Ao trazer essa cura à sua atenção, gostaria de enfatizar que uma doença considerada gravíssima foi completamente curada pela mudança de pensamento provocada na consciência do paciente pela leitura de Ciência e Saúde. Esse fato naturalmente leva o consulente a se perguntar: Qual foi a natureza dessa mudança? O que esse livro-texto da Ciência Cristã ensina que afeta tão poderosamente o pensamento e a condição dos homens? No breve tempo que temos juntos, procurarei responder, em certa medida, a essas perguntas.

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has written on page 428 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the textbook of Christian Science, this important statement, “We must realize the ability of mental might to offset human misconceptions and to replace them with the life which is spiritual, not material.” Christian Science shows men how to utilize mental might, or the power of God, to destroy sin, heal disease, and understand eternal life. Its message is therefore a healing and a loving message. It comes to tell of the goodness and love of God and to show how you and I may immediately benefit therefrom.

I am going to begin the lecture by telling you of a healing which recently came to my attention, a healing which is a fair example of what is taking place wherever Christian Science is studied and faithfully applied. A lady living in Indiana began to have difficulty with her lungs in 1917. Her condition became steadily worse until in the fall of 1918 she was compelled to give up her home duties and enter a sanitarium, where she was placed in the tubercular ward. She continued to have medical attention until late in 1919, all the physicians who diagnosed her difficulty agreeing that she had tuberculosis in an advanced stage. They declared she had no more than a year to live. In the spring of 1920 she went to Utah hoping that the climate would benefit her. She was confined to her bed and could make no exertion without it bringing on severe hemorrhages. While in this condition a neighbor left with her a copy of Science and Health, explaining briefly the fundamental teachings of Christian Science. For a few days the book remained unopened. She had little faith that anything could cure her. The lady asked her husband if he believed the book would help her. He said he knew nothing about it, but that Christ Jesus had healed without drugs many years ago. She began to read and ponder this little book. Her strength returned with what seemed astonishing quickness and within less than a week she was able to leave her bed and resume her household duties. Within a month every symptom of the disease had disappeared, never to reappear. This lady very recently submitted to a severe medical examination and no trace of the disease was to be found.

In bringing this healing to your attention I would emphasize the point that a disease regarded as a most serious malady was completely healed through the change of thought brought about in the patient’s consciousness by the reading of Science and Health. This fact naturally leads the inquirer to ask, What was the nature of the change? What does this textbook of Christian Science teach that so powerfully affects the thought and condition of men? In the short time we are together I shall endeavor to answer, in some measure, these questions.
