Omnipresence

October 18, 1913 Issue of Christian Science Sentinel, by Martin C. Ebel

In a recent sermon a minister asked, “Is it possible for God to be always in our thoughts?” He then pointed out how one can carry in his mind a tune he has heard, and even hum it in the midst of his work, without interfering with the business he may be about. He also portrayed the human lover, who never has the loved one absent from his consciousness, and yet he in no wise allows that to interfere with his toil; never out of mind, and yet not in the way of his mental labor. The preacher said he believed that God can possess our minds unceasingly, and that one can have a godlike sense even if he is engaged in common work.

Shortly after this sermon came to my attention I was able to demonstrate its truth. I was engaged in experimental work in my business, and for a time did not seem to be making any progress in what I was trying to produce. I had previously, by mere chance, developed a chemical process which would prove of value if it could be reproduced, but the more I strove, the farther I seemed to be getting away from what I was pursuing. Anxiety and impatience began to manifest themselves in my mentality, as from day to day I found I was not making any headway; and while in this condition, the minister’s question presented itself, and it then occurred to me that if, instead of harboring anxious and impatient thoughts I would make room for God’s ideas, something might be accomplished, and if the work was mine to perfect, I would succeed.

With this thought in mind, I continued the experiments for several days, not meeting with immediate success, but no longer discouraged over my unsuccessful efforts. Stopping one day after another futile attempt, and searching my consciousness as to whether what I was about was really my work, my attention was attracted to some refuse matter among the products of my work. I seemed to be directed to use this to solve my problem. I did, and it proved to be the solution I sought. My own ability had failed me, but in relying on God’s help my efforts were crowned with success.

This is not the first instance in which the ever-present help of God has been instrumental in overcoming difficulties for me. On another occasion I found myself in a somewhat similar position to a man in a rudderless ship. In financing a business, I was suddenly confronted with the necessity of stepping into a chemistry plant and assuming responsibilities in something entirely foreign to me. It was necessary that the manufacturing should continue without interruption in order to overcome the harm which the business had already sustained; but there I stood, without the slightest knowledge of chemistry, seemingly unable to proceed. After endeavoring for several days to locate the former manager, I suddenly realized that I was not seeking in the right direction for assistance, and that God as the infinite Mind would surely guide me if I sought His aid. Calling on a practitioner for help, I proceeded to work out the problem by clinging steadfastly to the truth, knowing that all is possible with God.

This happened on Friday. On the following Monday I was able to give a successful public demonstration of the merits of a product which had suddenly been condemned by the trade generally, and at once regained for it the reputation which it formerly possessed, having been able to do this solely through divine guidance, performing a chemist’s duties in manufacturing without even the formula at hand to work by.

Physically, I have had many beautiful demonstrations of the wonderful healing power which has again been revealed to the world through the teaching of Christian Science, one most marvelous to me happening while I was engaged in my laboratory, attempting to force open a case. In doing so I drove a nail through my finger. I naturally felt the sharp pain, but without stopping to examine how serious the injury was, I immediately began to realize, to the best of my understanding, “the scientific statement of being” as taught in our text-book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 468). Continuing at my work for several hours, handling poisonous ingredients, washing my hands as usual at the completion of my day’s duties, and finally arriving at home, I did not discover until then that a rusty nail had passed entirely through my third finger. Then I faltered for a moment, but recognizing through the scientific statement the nothingness of matter, I paid no further attention to the injury, and while for some days the marks were distinctly visible, I suffered absolutely no inconvenience from it. The healing was practically instantaneous.

Recently I found myself standing on a street corner of that busy thoroughfare, Broadway, New York, declaring against an ache which to my material senses had become decidedly real. I had just left a restaurant to keep an appointment, when I was seized with severe pain, such as a cavity in a tooth seems to produce. I had lost rather a large filling from a tooth some weeks before, but had so far been able to overcome any annoyance felt from it through my knowledge of Christian Science. My suffering first brought a dentist to mind, but I was away from home and could not hurry to one. While contemplating what to do, the thought came to me that as God is not the creator of discord, it is certainly within His power to destroy a toothache. I had reached the street corner, and stood there for some time unconscious of my surroundings, pondering over that one thought which had come to me. When I became conscious of my environment, I found that the pain had fled, and since that moment I have had no return of it.

These two narratives are simply incidents of many wonderful healings I have personally experienced. Two children, a daughter thirteen years of age, and a son eleven years of age, have never tasted medicine, though they have had attacks of illness to which children are believed to be heirs. These attacks were, however, always promptly met through Christian Science. That life is eternal, and that there is no death, I could never clearly perceive until a short time ago, when one very close to me and mine, and very dear to us, passed from this sphere of existence to her “heavenly rest” (Poems, p. 5). Then in hours of sorrow there slowly dawned on me that spiritual truth, that in God alone “we live, and move, and have our being;” that though we pass through the transition called death, our life cannot be taken from us, and that to know God aright is life eternal.

Joyfully do I take this opportunity to acknowledge publicly my infinite debt of gratitude to God for the spiritual understanding that is daily appearing more clearly to me; and likewise my boundless debt of gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the great wisdom which was imparted to her in unfolding this truth to us, and for that light which never faileth, when at times darkness seemed to be overtaking me.
