O “Eu Sou o que Eu Sou”

Quando o Senhor o enviou em sua missão de libertar os filhos de Israel do cativeiro no Egito, Moisés disse a Deus: “Eis que, quando eu for aos filhos de Israel e lhes disser: O Deus de vossos pais me enviou a vós; e eles me perguntarem: Qual é o seu nome? que eu lhes direi?” E lemos: “Disse Deus a Moisés: EU SOU O QUE SOU. Disse mais: Assim dirás aos filhos de Israel: EU SOU me enviou a vós.” Essa missão de Moisés, o servo obediente de Deus, foi certamente uma missão de amor; pois libertar os israelitas de um trabalho árduo e injusto, em meio ao pecado, à idolatria e ao afastamento do Deus verdadeiro e vivo, parecia uma tarefa muito difícil — uma tarefa que exigia a inspiração do amor sob o cuidado protetor de Deus.

Depois que os filhos de Israel foram tirados do Egito, eles receberam a amorosa proteção de Deus de forma tão visível que as hostes egípcias que os perseguiam não conseguiram alcançá-los nem destruí-los; pelo contrário, foram elas mesmas destruídas, enquanto os israelitas atravessavam o meio do mar em terra seca. Moisés comprovou o amor, o poder e a proteção sempre presentes de Deus ao suprir as necessidades diárias do povo durante a jornada pelo deserto e ao dar-lhes também os Dez Mandamentos. Lemos em Deuteronômio: “Chamou Moisés a todo o Israel e lhes disse: Ouve, ó Israel, os estatutos e juízos que hoje Eu vos falo aos ouvidos; e aprendê-los-eis e guardá-los-eis, para os cumprir. O Senhor, nosso Deus, fez conosco uma aliança em Horebe. Não fizeram nossos pais esta aliança, mas nós, sim, nós, que hoje aqui estamos todos vivos.” Não seria essa uma aliança de obediência e gratidão, em amorosa lembrança de seu maravilhoso livramento pela mão de Deus?

Ao longo de todas as suas experiências, os filhos de Israel contaram com a amorosa proteção do Senhor. Quando Saul estava em guerra contra os filisteus, estes tentaram intimidar os israelitas para que se submetessem, utilizando a força material. Deus, porém, mostrou-lhes que a jactância do erro não passava de ilusão, de nada; pois Davi aproximou-se, praticamente desarmado, e, em nome do Senhor, desafiou Golias, o filisteu, e o venceu; e as hostes dos filisteus foram postas em fuga.

A vida e as experiências de Elias mostram que a pregação e o ensino dos profetas de Baal e de seus seguidores eram, da mesma forma, apenas erro, desprovidos de realidade; pois, durante todo o dia, clamaram em vão para que o fogo descesse e consumisse o sacrifício. Mas, quando Elias clamou, o Senhor respondeu; e o fogo caiu, não apenas consumindo o sacrifício, mas também lambendo a água da valeta. Muitas outras experiências maravilhosas são relatadas na Bíblia, mostrando a palavra de Deus salvando aqueles que criam no único Deus verdadeiro e vivo; e assim foi através dos séculos, até que Cristo Jesus ensinou e demonstrou a verdade que cura, o amor vivo e a Vida eterna. Lemos em João: “Porque a lei foi dada por intermédio de Moisés; a Graça e a Verdade vieram por meio de Jesus Cristo.”

Durante séculos, a verdade foi negada e combatida pelo erro, até que, em nossa época, Mary Baker Eddy, repleta do espírito de Deus, explicou e comprovou o poder de Deus, o Espírito, sobre a matéria — o mesmo poder que Cristo Jesus ensinou e demonstrou durante sua gloriosa trajetória. Foi Jesus também quem deu aos seus seguidores a oração que começa com “Pai nosso, que estás nos céus”, tornando assim a todos uma só família. Nossos semelhantes são, portanto, nossos irmãos e irmãs; e todos são filhos de Deus, o Amor divino — e, se filhos, então herdeiros; herdeiros de todas as qualidades maravilhosas de nosso Pai celestial, todas as qualidades boas e perfeitas, tais como somente o Amor divino pode expressar. Ao refletirmos essas boas qualidades, glorificamos o santo nome de nosso Pai celestial, para cujo louvor desejamos viver, vigiar, trabalhar e orar.

Mas, se nossos pensamentos estivessem tão repletos de objetivos e desejos materiais, e de ambições mundanas, a ponto de as coisas materiais nos parecerem mais importantes do que a vida espiritual e a bem-aventurança, esqueceríamos de ser gratos a Deus por toda a Sua bondade amorosa, proteção e cuidado; e nos afastaríamos do bem que desejamos tornar nosso. À medida que as coisas materiais, nas quais antes encontrávamos alegria, começam a nos parecer irreais, e a vida espiritual passa a ser vista como o único caminho verdadeiro para a felicidade — visto que somente Deus e as Suas ideias são reais e eternos, enquanto a matéria é desprovida de qualquer realidade —, então estamos ouvindo a “voz mansa e delicada”, então estamos obedecendo à lei do Amor.

Quanto mais nossos corações sentem a verdade espiritual e reconhecem Deus como o único Criador, com mais diligência nos empenharemos em seguir o nosso Guia, tanto em palavras quanto em ações. O Mestre, que viveu uma vida de amor em prol de toda a humanidade, refletia as qualidades maravilhosas do Pai celestial, a Mente divina; e ele estava sempre ocupado com os negócios de seu Pai. Lemos em João: “E aquele que me enviou está comigo; o Pai não me deixou só, porque Eu faço sempre o que lhe agrada.”

Deus está atraindo Seus filhos para Si com Amor, com todo o bem que é incompreensível ao sentido material. Quando a Ciência Cristã nos encontrou, não éramos todos materialistas? Não pensávamos que a mente estava na matéria? Não atribuíamos à matéria o poder de aliviar nossas dores, nossas enfermidades e nossos desconfortos? Não tentamos ao máximo os meios materiais e constatamos que eram insuficientes? Oh, a bênção da Ciência divina! Ela nos foi trazida de maneira tão sábia, gentil e amorosa; e nós a experimentamos. Nós a estudamos, cada dia mais ávidos pela verdade que ela revela.

Quão maravilhosamente Deus conduz Seus filhos! Assim como Moisés, nos tempos antigos, tirou os filhos de Israel da escravidão do Egito e os levou à terra prometida, a Ciência Cristã nos tira das trevas materiais e nos conduz à luz gloriosa da compreensão espiritual. Nosso Guia diz: “Eu sou a luz do mundo; quem me segue não andará em trevas, mas terá a luz da vida”. A Sra. Eddy diz em Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras* (p. 227): “A Ciência Cristã ergue o estandarte da liberdade e clama: ‘Sigam-me! Escapem da escravidão da doença, do pecado e da morte!’ Jesus traçou o caminho. Cidadãos do mundo, aceitem a ‘gloriosa liberdade dos filhos de Deus’ e sejam livres!”

Estamos aprendendo a ser gratos por nossas provações, tribulações e tristezas passadas; pois não foram elas o meio de nos voltarmos para a harmoniosa morada de nosso Pai? E não encontramos alegria, paz e um amor maior e mais profundo por Deus e pelo próximo? E nossas provações atuais não nos mantêm alertas para tomar a cruz diariamente e seguir a Cristo, a Verdade? Poderemos algum dia ser suficientemente gratos a Deus e a Cristo Jesus, nosso Guia, por essa gentil presença angelical, a Ciência divina? Poderemos algum dia chegar perto de expressar sequer uma parte da gratidão que devemos à nossa estimada Líder por explicar a missão de Cristo Jesus na terra de maneira tão sábia, prática e poderosa — uma maneira tão adequada às nossas necessidades atuais? Somente por meio da oração incessante e da ajuda amorosa à nossa Causa é que podemos demonstrar nossa gratidão pelas riquezas espirituais e pela bem-aventurança que nos foram concedidas graças ao estudo da Ciência Cristã.

A vanglória do erro está sendo gradualmente silenciada à medida que a Verdade supera pensamentos e crenças errôneos e enriquece o mundo com mais amor a Deus e à humanidade. As trevas estão desaparecendo rapidamente, pois a luz chegou! Essa luz nos revela o significado do cântico dos anjos, ouvido pelos pastores solitários há quase dois mil anos, nos campos próximos a Belém.

The I Am That I Am

When the Lord sent him on his mission to free the children of Israel from their Egyptian bondage, Moses said unto God: “Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” And we read, “God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” This mission of Moses, the obedient servant of God, was certainly a mission of love; for to free the Israelites from hard, unjust labor, in the midst of sin, idolatry, and estrangement from the true, living God, was seemingly a very difficult task, one that needed the inspiration of love under God’s protecting care.

After the children of Israel had been brought out of Egypt, they so visibly received God’s loving protection that the pursuing hosts of the Egyptians could not overtake and destroy them, but were themselves destroyed, while the Israelites walked through the midst of the sea on dry land. Moses proved God’s ever present love, power, and protection in providing the people with their daily needs during their journey through the wilderness, and in giving them also the Ten Commandments. We read in Deuteronomy: “And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The Lord made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.” Was not this a covenant of obedience and gratitude in loving remembrance of their wonderful delivery by the hand of God?

All through their experiences the children of Israel had the loving protection of the Lord. When Saul was at war with the Philistines, the latter tried to frighten the Israelites into submission by material force. God, however, showed them that the boastfulness of error was but an illusion, nothingness; for David approached, practically unarmed, and in the name of the Lord challenged Goliath the Philistine, and conquered him; and the hosts of the Philistines were put to flight.

The life and experiences of Elijah show that the preaching and teaching of Baal’s prophets and their followers were likewise only error, void of reality; for all day they called in vain for the fire to come down to consume their sacrifice. But when Elijah called, the Lord answered; and the fire fell, not only consuming the sacrifice, but also licking up the water in the trench. Many more wonderful experiences are related in the Bible, which show God’s word saving those who believed in the only true, living God; and so on through the ages until Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated the healing truth, the living love, and Life everlasting. We read in John, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

For centuries, the truth had been denied and opposed by error until in our time Mary Baker Eddy, filled with the spirit of God, explained and proved the power of God, Spirit, over matter, the same power Christ Jesus taught and demonstrated during his glorious career. It was Jesus also who gave his followers the prayer which begins, “Our Father which art in heaven,” thus making all one family. Our fellow-men are thus our brothers and sisters; and all are the children of God, divine Love—and if children, then heirs, heirs of all the wonderful qualities of our heavenly Father, all the good and perfect qualities, such as only divine Love can express. By reflecting these good qualities, we glorify the holy name of our heavenly Father, for whose praise we desire to live, watch, work, and pray. But if our thoughts should be so filled with material aims and desires, and worldly ambitions, that material things look to us more important than spiritual living and blessedness, we would forget to be grateful to God for all His lovingkindness, protection, and care; and we would drift away from the good we wish to make our own.

As material things in which we formerly rejoiced begin to appear unreal to us, and spiritual living is seen as the only true way to happiness, since God and His ideas alone are real and eternal, while matter is void of all reality—then are we listening to the “still small voice,” then are we obeying the law of Love. The more our hearts feel the spiritual truth and know God as the only creator, the more diligently we shall strive to follow our Way-shower in word and deed. The Master, who lived his loving life for the good of all mankind, reflected the wonderful qualities of the heavenly Father, divine Mind; and he was ever about his Father’s business. We read in John: “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.”

God is drawing His children to Him with love, with all the good which is incomprehensible to material sense. When Christian Science found us, were we not all materialists? Did we not think that mind was in matter? Did we not ascribe to matter power to ease our pains, our ailments, our discomforts? Did we not try material means to the utmost and find them wanting? Oh, the blessedness of divine Science! It has been brought to us in such a wise, gentle, and loving way; and we have tried it. We have studied it, more eager each day for the truth it reveals.

How wonderfully God is leading His children! As Moses of old brought the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage into the promised land, so is Christian Science bringing us out of material darkness into the glorious light of spiritual understanding. Our Way-shower says, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Mrs. Eddy says in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 227): “Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: ‘Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!’ Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free!”

We are learning to be thankful for our former trials, tribulations, and sorrows; for have they not been the means of our turning to our Father’s harmonious dwelling place? And have we not found joy, peace, and more and deeper love for God and man? And do not our present trials keep us alert to take up the cross daily and follow Christ, Truth? Can we ever be grateful enough to God and to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, for this gentle angel-presence, divine Science? Can we ever come near to expressing even a part of the gratitude we owe our revered Leader for explaining Christ Jesus’ mission on earth in such a wise, practical, and powerful way, a way so well suited to our present needs? It is only by unceasing prayer and loving helpfulness for our Cause that we can show our gratitude for the spiritual riches and blessedness bestowed upon us through the study of Christian Science.

The loud boasting of error is gradually being hushed, as Truth overpowers erroneous thoughts and beliefs, and enriches the world with more love for God and mankind. Darkness is fast disappearing; for the light has come! This light is demonstrating to us the meaning of the angels’ song, heard by the lonely shepherds nearly two thousand years ago in the fields near Bethlehem.
