A Oportunidade Sempre Presente

Paulo escreveu: “Agora é o tempo aceitável”, e os versos a seguir, de autoria de um poeta pouco conhecido da atualidade, são significativos do despertar do pensamento para um conceito melhor de oportunidade:

Enganam-se os que dizem que não volto mais

Se, ao bater à porta, não os encontro lá;

Pois todo dia estou à espera, a chamar,

Para que despertem, se ergam, lutem e vençam.

Até agora, a literatura poética sobre a oportunidade não passava de um reflexo de uma visão muito limitada do assunto. Quando Shakespeare escreveu:

Há uma maré nos assuntos dos homens

Que, aproveitada na maré alta, conduz à fortuna;

Se perdida, toda a viagem de suas vidas

Fica presa em baixios e misérias

Ele não apenas expressou uma crença humana profundamente arraigada, mas também ajudou a gravá-la no pensamento da humanidade. Ele cristalizou uma falácia em uma linguagem bela.

Outros poetas ajudaram a trancar a porta da oportunidade com uma chave feita de palavras. Podemos, portanto, alegrar-nos pelo fato de a Ciência Cristã ter lançado uma nova luz de compreensão sobre essa ideia; de que, vista sob a ótica da verdade, a oportunidade tornou-se a porta para o céu, permanecendo para sempre entreaberta. Disse-se muito bem que o homem está sempre na posição da oportunidade — não uma ou duas vezes, nem apenas em momentos isolados da experiência humana, mas para sempre — e é capaz de aproveitá-la.

Examinemos mais de perto o que realmente é a oportunidade e por que ela é sempre nossa. Definida pelos dicionários, ela é a adequação do momento ou de outras circunstâncias ao objetivo desejado. Fica imediatamente evidente que essa definição é inteiramente material e, portanto, limitada pela crença no bem e no mal. Segundo ela, a oportunidade do homem é regida pelo tempo e por circunstâncias materiais sobre as quais ele não tem controle, e o objetivo desejado, ao qual uma determinada oportunidade conduz, pode ser bom ou mau. Sob essa definição, o momento ou as circunstâncias favoráveis ao roubo cometido por um ladrão constituem uma oportunidade tanto quanto aqueles favoráveis a qualquer ação justa.

Pode-se dizer, no entanto, que, para o mortal comum, a palavra oportunidade significa aquela ocasião favorável propícia para alcançar um bom objetivo. No pensamento popular, oportunidade é sinônimo de chance para o bem, para o êxito. Mesmo para o ladrão mencionado anteriormente, a oportunidade de roubar seria considerada uma oportunidade para o bem — isto é, segundo sua concepção equivocada do que seja o bem. Vê-se, assim, que a oportunidade, do ponto de vista de quem a busca, é sempre considerada boa. O objetivo a ser alcançado, ao qual a oportunidade conduz, deve ser um objetivo bom. Analisada sob a ótica comum dos mortais, a oportunidade é sempre desejável; ela leva à conquista de objetivos considerados bons, mas fica à mercê das circunstâncias. Certamente, essa é uma base instável para algo que a crença mortal valoriza tanto.

Por outro lado, o que vemos quando consideramos a oportunidade sob a ótica da Ciência Cristã, ou da verdade absoluta? Segundo nossa definição, oportunidade é a adequação de tempo ou de outras circunstâncias propícias para alcançar um objetivo desejado. Ora, não existe objetivo desejado que não seja a conquista do bem. Por mais que os mortais se deixem enganar na busca das coisas que parecem desejar, fundamentalmente — tenham ou não despertado para a verdade a esse respeito —, o que eles realmente buscam como único objetivo e propósito da existência é o bem, ou a Verdade, o conhecimento e a compreensão de Deus; em outras palavras, a salvação. Esse é o objetivo para o qual o homem mortal luta, na maioria das vezes às cegas. A única oportunidade existente é aquela que abre, para o homem, o caminho para esse objetivo único e verdadeiramente desejável.

A oportunidade é mental, não material. Ela envolve ação; a ação depende do pensamento, e o pensamento, da Mente. A oportunidade pressupõe um pensador ativo e consciente. O homem mortal permanece sempre na posição da oportunidade, pois encontra-se, a todo momento, no ponto de decisão. Em cada instante de existência consciente, ele decide se sua consciência será a consciência do bem ou a consciência do mal; se aceitará a oportunidade que significa todo o bem, toda a paz, toda a harmonia, toda a felicidade — o céu. Essa oportunidade de refletir Deus, ou a Verdade, na consciência, não depende de tempo nem de circunstâncias. É a única oportunidade real, pois, sendo Deus a fonte de toda a verdade, refletir qualquer coisa à parte de Deus é refletir uma crença falsa, uma irrealidade ou o nada. Portanto, pode-se dizer cientificamente que não existe oportunidade para o mal, e que a oportunidade não pode deixar de ser boa. Assim, a Sra. Eddy declara que “não há lugar nem oportunidade na Ciência para o erro de qualquer espécie” Ciência e Saúde, p. 232.

A oportunidade de banir o falso e dar lugar ao verdadeiro está sempre presente para toda a humanidade, de igual modo. Nenhuma condição, posição ou circunstância humana pode retirá-la. Não existe desigualdade de oportunidades, pois para cada um mortal, é possível alcançar a consciência do bem sem limites. Nenhuma lei de hereditariedade, educação, ambiente ou hábito pode privar o ser humano da oportunidade de cultivar pensamentos de amor e de bem, nem impedir sua aproximação de Deus. É na própria consciência que reside toda oportunidade; quando aproveitamos essa oportunidade para expressar a Mente única — Deus —, a verdade sobre o homem ou o verdadeiro ser, estamos realizando uma boa obra. Esse trabalho de expressar a Deus, de manter a consciência do bem e de cultivar pensamentos corretos constitui o “Deus conosco”, a manifestação do Cristo. Essa é a presença divina que cura os enfermos, elimina o pecado e traz salvação, não apenas a nós mesmos, mas ao mundo. Essa é a única oportunidade real, e ela está sempre presente.

À medida que nos empenhamos sinceramente em manter a consciência do bem, surgirão em nossa experiência terrena momentos e circunstâncias favoráveis, que o homem mortal reconhece como oportunidades. A verdade sobre a oportunidade — o fato de ela ser universal e eterna — é a lei que rege a noção ou crença mortal a respeito dela. É a lei que assegura oportunidade para todos, agora e para sempre.

Ao longo dos tempos, a humanidade tem fechado a porta da oportunidade na maior parte das vezes, por desconhecer a verdadeira natureza da oportunidade e como buscá-la. O segredo para encontrá-la reside na mesma lei que Jesus estabeleceu no Sermão do Monte: “Buscai primeiro o reino de Deus e a sua justiça, e todas estas coisas vos serão acrescentadas”. Da mesma forma, pode-se dizer: buscai primeiro a consciência de Deus, o bem, e toda oportunidade justa será vossa. Contudo, essa busca trará também uma nova compreensão do que é oportunidade. Ela significará menos a busca por obter as coisas do mundo e mais a conquista das coisas de Deus.

Aqueles que trilham caminhos de humildade podem sentir que suas oportunidades de sucesso foram escassas, que as circunstâncias de nascimento, educação e ambiente os excluíram das grandes oportunidades que outros tiveram; esse sentimento pode ser intensificado pela alta estima que o mundo atribui às coisas materiais. Lembremo-nos, porém, de que o sucesso, tal como o mundo o concebe, não aproxima o homem de Deus; e que nenhum sucesso é real ou satisfatório se ele não se aproximar ou alcança do verdadeiro objetivo da vida: a compreensão de Deus. Ao examinarmos a história da humanidade, quem se destaca, através dos tempos, como o exemplo do maior sucesso real? Sem dúvida, é Cristo Jesus; e, no entanto, ele não buscou oportunidades para obter riquezas, poder ou fama. Ele disse: “Devo ocupar-me dos negócios de meu Pai”. Essa era a sua compreensão do significado da vida. Podemos muito bem nos perguntar se necessitamos de alguma oportunidade maior do que a que ele teve.

O que a Verdade sobre a oportunidade significa na prática? Significa que aqueles que estão doentes têm agora o privilégio de rejeitar essa crença falsa e chegar à compreensão de que o homem é perfeito — imagem e semelhança de Deus, não sujeito a nenhuma lei da matéria; de saber que a saúde depende da Mente, e não da matéria; que o homem é a ideia da Mente e, portanto, é sustentado e governado em perfeita harmonia por Deus. Significa que, neste exato momento, é possível para aqueles que pecaram e sentem o peso da condenação saber que a imagem e semelhança de Deus é, e sempre foi, perfeita e isenta de pecado; que, neste instante, “o velho homem com as suas obras” pode ser deixado de lado.

Na medida em que alguém está pronto para abandonar o mal e preencher sua Consciência com Amor, Verdade e a Compreensão correta, nenhuma crença no passado pode mantê-lo em cativeiro ou sob condenação, pois o homem é o reflexo sempre presente de Deus. Isso significa que aqueles que sofrem podem aprender que nada de verdadeiro pode ser destruído, porque a Verdade é eterna; que o nascimento e a morte humanos são fases da crença mortal que desaparecerão com a compreensão de que o homem, como ideia de Deus, “nunca nasce e nunca morre” (*Ciência e Saúde*, p. 258), mas é coexistente com Deus. Finalmente, significa que, não importa qual fase da sugestão mortal tente impor suas falsidades — desarmonia, infelicidade, carência ou sofrimento de qualquer tipo ou natureza —, este é o momento e a ocasião favoráveis para afirmar o domínio do homem, sua perfeição, sua semelhança com Deus; este é o momento da oportunidade sempre presente de permitir que haja em nós a Mente “que houve também em Cristo Jesus”, de conquistar a liberdade de todas as crenças mortais e, assim, tomar posse de nossa herança: o céu.

Opportunity Ever Present

Paul wrote, “Now is the accepted time,” and the following lines from the pen of a little known poet of the present day are significant of the awakening of thought to a better concept of opportunity:

They do me wrong who say I come no more

When once I knock and fail to find you in;

For every day I stand outside your door

And bid you wake and rise to fight and win.

Heretofore the poetical literature of opportunity has been but the reflection of a very limited view of the subject. When Shakespeare wrote,—

There is a tide in the affairs of men,

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries,—

he not only gave expression to a deeply rooted human belief, but he helped to impress it upon the thought of mankind. He crystallized a fallacy in beautiful language. Other poets have helped to lock the door of opportunity with a key of words. We may well rejoice, therefore, that Christian Science has turned upon this idea a new light of understanding; that seen with the vision of truth, opportunity has become the door to heaven, standing forever ajar. It has been finely said that man is forever at the standpoint of opportunity, — not once, not twice, not alone in human experience, but forever,—and is able and capable of seizing it.

Let us look more closely to see what opportunity really is and why it is always ours. Defined by the dictionaries, it is suitableness of time or other circumstances adapted to the end desired. It is immediately apparent that this definition is entirely material, and hence limited by a belief of good and evil. According to it, man’s opportunity is governed by time and material circumstances over which he has no control, and the end desired to which a given opportunity opens, may be either good or evil. Under this definition the time or circumstances which are favorable to the theft of the thief are as much an opportunity as those favorable to any righteous action.

It may be said, however, that in the mind of the ordinary mortal the word opportunity stands for that favorable occasion which is adapted to secure a good end. Opportunity in popular thought is synonymous with a chance for good, for success. Even to the thief just spoken of, the opportunity to steal would be considered an opportunity for good; that is, from his false concept of what good is. Hence it may be seen that opportunity, as far as the one seeking it is concerned, is always considered good. The end to be achieved, to which opportunity leads, must be a good end. Examined then from the ordinary view-point of mortals, opportunity is always desirable; it leads to the attainment of ends called good, but it stands at the mercy of circumstance. Surely this is an unstable foundation for what mortal belief so highly prizes.

On the other hand, what do we see when we consider opportunity from the standpoint of Christian Science, or absolute truth? According to our definition, opportunity is suitableness of time or other circumstances adapted to secure a desired end. Now, there is no desired end but the attainment of good. However much mortals may be misled in the pursuit of those things they seem to desire, fundamentally, whether they have awakened to the truth about it or not, what they really seek as the one end and aim of existence is good, or Truth, a knowledge and understanding of God; in other words, salvation. This is the end toward which mortal man is struggling, for the most part blindly. The only opportunity there is, is that which opens man’s way to this one and only desirable end.

Opportunity is mental, not material. It involves action, and action depends on thought, and thought on Mind. Opportunity presupposes an active, conscious thinker. Mortal man remains forever at the standpoint of opportunity, because he rests at all times at the point of decision. At every moment of conscious existence he decides whether his consciousness shall be the consciousness of good or the consciousness of evil; whether he will accept the opportunity that means all good, all peace, all harmony, all happiness, heaven. This opportunity for reflecting God, or Truth, in consciousness, is dependent on no time or circumstance. It is the only real opportunity, because God being the source of all truth, to reflect anything apart from God is to reflect a false belief, an unreality, or nothing. Hence it can be scientifically said that there is no opportunity for evil, and that opportunity cannot be otherwise than good. Thus Mrs. Eddy declares that “there is neither place nor opportunity in Science for error of any sort” Science and Health, p. 232.

The opportunity to cast out the false and give place to the true is ever present to all mankind equally. No human condition, position, or circumstance can take it away. There is no inequality of opportunity, for to every mortal the consciousness of good without measure is possible. No law of heredity, education, environment, or habit can shut out any man from the opportunity to think thoughts of love and good or hinder his approach to God. In the arena of one’s own consciousness lies all opportunity, and when we avail ourselves of this opportunity to express the one Mind, God, the truth about man, or true being, we are doing good work. This work of expressing God, holding the consciousness of good, thinking right thought, is “God with us,” the appearing of Christ. This is that divine presence which heals the sick, casts out sin, and brings salvation, not only to ourselves but to the world. This is the only real opportunity, and it is ever present.

In proportion as we earnestly endeavor to maintain the consciousness of good, there will come into our earthly experience those favorable times and circumstances which are known to mortal man as opportunities. The truth about opportunity, the fact that it is universal and eternal, is the law which governs the mortal sense or belief of opportunity. It is the law which means all opportunity for all, now and forever.

Throughout the ages, mankind has closed the door of opportunity most of the time through ignorance of what opportunity really is and how to seek it. The secret of its finding lies in that same law which Jesus laid down in his Sermon on the Mount: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” In like manner it may be said, Seek ye first the consciousness of God, good, and all right opportunity shall be yours. But with that seeking will also come a different sense of opportunity. It will mean less chance for gaining the things of the world, and more a gaining of the things of God.

Those who are walking in humble paths may feel that their opportunities for success have been few, that circumstances of birth, education, ‘and environment have excluded them from those greater opportunities which have come to others, and this feeling may be intensified by the high estimation which the world places on the things of the world. Let it be remembered, however, that success as the world sees it does not bring men nearer God; that no success is real or satisfying that fails to put him who wins nearer to life’s real goal, the understanding of God. Looking up and down the history of the world, who stands throughout all ages as the exemplar of the greatest real success? Without question it is Christ Jesus, and yet he sought no opportunity to gain either riches, or power, or fame. He said, “I must be about my Father’s business.” This was his understanding of what life means. We may well ask if we need any greater opportunity than was his.

What does the truth about opportunity mean practically? It means that those who are sick have now the privilege of casting out this false belief and coming to an understanding of man as perfect, the image and likeness of God, not subject to any law of matter; of knowing that health is dependent on Mind, not matter; that man is the idea of Mind, and therefore is sustained and governed in perfect harmony by God. It means that right now it is possible for those who have sinned and feel the burden of condemnation, to know that the image and likeness of God is and always has been perfect and sinless; that at this instant “the old man with his deeds” may be put off.

In so far as one is ready to forsake evil and to fill his consciousness with love, with truth, with right understanding, no belief of a past can hold him in bondage or under condemnation, because man is the everpresent, reflection of God. This means that those who are sorrowing may learn that nothing true can be destroyed, because truth is eternal; that human birth and death are phases of mortal belief which will disappear with the understanding that man as the idea of God is “never born and never dying” (Science and Health, p. 258), but coexistent with God. Finally, it means that no matter what phase of mortal suggestion may argue its falsities, inharmony, unhappiness, want or woe of any name or nature, right now is that favorable time and occasion for asserting man’s dominion, his perfection, his likeness to God; right now is the ever-present opportunity to let that Mind be in us “which was also in Christ Jesus,” to win freedom from all mortal beliefs and thus to enter upon our heritage—heaven.
