Superando o mal

Ao considerarmos a questão de como lidar com o mal por meio da Verdade, duas declarações de nossa amada Líder, Mary Baker Eddy, destacam-se como faróis no pensamento do estudante da Ciência Cristã. A primeira delas encontra-se em seu livro Escritos Diversos (p. 334), onde ela escreve: “Você deve descobrir que o erro não é nada: então, e somente então, você o trata com Ciência.” A segunda declaração está em seu livro Retrospecção e Introspecção (p. 64) e diz o seguinte: “É científico permanecer em harmonia consciente, na Verdade e no Amor que dão saúde e são imortais. Para isso, os mortais devem primeiro abrir os olhos para todas as formas ilusórias, métodos e sutilezas do erro, para que a ilusão, o erro, possa ser destruída; se isso não for feito, os mortais se tornarão vítimas do erro.”

A partir dessas duas declarações, fica evidente que Mary Baker Eddy esperava que os Cientistas Cristãos provassem a inexistência do erro em todas as suas fases por meio de uma compreensão abrangente da verdade sobre Deus e o homem. Ninguém percebeu com mais clareza do que nossa Líder a necessidade de provar a inexistência do erro, e ninguém viu com mais certeza que a inexistência do erro jamais seria provada simplesmente dizendo que ele não existe e deixando por isso mesmo, mas sim demonstrando a infinitude da Verdade.

A Ciência Cristã veio para analisar, expor e destruir o mal de toda espécie. É certo que o mal jamais se exporia, se analisaria ou se destruiria sozinho. Portanto, tudo o que auxilia nesse processo deve vir de Deus. Tudo o que o mal deseja é ser deixado em paz, para que possa continuar a iludir e destruir os mortais. Os Cientistas Cristãos, contudo, aceitaram a alegre responsabilidade de demonstrar a totalidade de Deus e a inexistência do mal em todas as suas fases; de fato, os sábios Cientistas Cristãos reconhecem que devem seguir o mandamento de Jesus: “Que a vossa comunicação seja: Sim, sim; Não, não”. Eles devem, portanto, compreender, afirmar e declarar a verdade sobre Deus e sobre o homem em Sua Ciência infinita, e com essa compreensão espiritual devem também aprender a negar a atividade hipotética do mal em todas as suas sutilezas.

A Ciência Cristã ensina muito claramente que a ignorância do erro e de suas operações não protege contra o erro; nem a crença no mal como algo real protege contra o mal. Mas a compreensão espiritual de Deus e do verdadeiro homem, que desvenda, expõe e destrói o mal em suas inúmeras ilusões, e assim prova sua insignificância, é essencial para o progresso de todo Cientista Cristão e de toda a humanidade.

A Ciência Cristã ensina que todo o mal está contido na chamada mente mortal ou carnal, que Jesus descreveu como mentirosa, e seu efeito como a mentira do mentiroso. Mary Baker Eddy usou o termo “magnetismo animal” para incluir tanto o mentiroso quanto sua mentira. Um estudo minucioso dos ensinamentos de Jesus e de Mary Baker Eddy mostrará claramente que ambos reconheceram a necessidade de lidar com a mentira — incluindo o pecado, a doença e a morte — lidando primeiramente com o mentiroso — a chamada mente mortal ou carnal — por meio da Verdade. Os Cientistas Cristãos, portanto, estão empenhados em destruir os efeitos da chamada mente carnal, do pecado, da doença, da morte e da mortalidade, negando primeiramente a chamada mente mortal ou carnal, com a compreensão espiritual de que existe apenas uma Mente divina — Deus.

É evidente que, desde que nossa Líder discerniu a necessidade de ensinar aos Cientistas Cristãos como desvendar e destruir as sutilezas da mente carnal por meio da compreensão da Verdade infinita, houve ocasiões em que o maligno tentou convencer os Cientistas Cristãos de que esse processo divino não é necessário, mas que basta declarar a totalidade de Deus e deixar o mal em paz. Todo estudante da Ciência Cristã faria bem em ler, de tempos em tempos, o artigo de nossa Líder intitulado “Vigiar versus ‘estar em guarda'” A Primeira Igreja de Cristo, Cientista e Miscelânea, p. 232. Também seria bom que ele se lembrasse de que nossa Líder indica que, embora estudantes infiéis possam declarar que ele trata do magnetismo animal, muitas vezes se recusam a ter qualquer envolvimento com o assunto. Foi a rara espiritualidade de Cristo Jesus e de Mary Baker Eddy que lhes permitiu ver tanto a necessidade quanto o caminho de lidar, por meio da Ciência divina, com o magnetismo animal em suas diversas crenças e manifestações. À medida que os Cientistas Cristãos se tornam mais espiritualmente inclinados, eles também despertarão mais plenamente para esse privilégio divino.

A Ciência Cristã ensina os homens a prevenir o mal. Esse processo divino de desvendar e destruir o mal tem o único propósito de provar a insignificância do mal e, assim, destruí-lo por meio da compreensão da Verdade. Durante séculos, os homens têm sofrido com as ilusões do maligno, que, segundo Paulo, “se opõe e se exalta acima de tudo o que se chama Deus ou é objeto de culto; de modo que ele, como Deus, se assenta no templo de Deus, mostrando-se como se fosse Deus”. [2 Ts 2:4]

Os homens, porém, não compreenderam o que os aprisionaram. Nesse estado mental ilusório, aceitaram os efeitos da mente carnal, como o pecado, a doença, a guerra e a morte, como realidades, e até mesmo como condições dadas por Deus. Será que a Ciência Cristã, então, tornará o magnetismo animal mais real quando nos revelar o funcionamento e a falsidade dessa influência maligna e nos mostrar como destruir sua suposta realidade? Certamente que não!

O sábio Cientista Cristão sabe que lhe é necessário, em todos os momentos, a cada minuto de sua vida, manter diante de si a totalidade de Deus, a Mente divina. Sabe também, porém, que é sábio aplicar sua compreensão espiritual da sempre presente Mente divina e suas infinitas ideias à aniquilação das ilusões do magnetismo animal.

Se ele pensasse continuamente nas obras do mal, excluindo a totalidade de Deus, estaria invertendo o caminho correto da libertação e, assim, impedindo a superação científica do mal. O fato é que nada pode expor, analisar e destruir o mal senão a compreensão espiritual que Deus é Tudo. Portanto, é de suma importância que os Cientistas Cristãos, em seus esforços para libertar os homens das ilusões do magnetismo animal por meio do processo divinamente científico de desvendar, expor e destruir suas sutilezas, tenham sempre diante de si o fato de que Deus, a Mente divina, é, sempre foi e sempre será a única Mente.

O pensamento e a experiência mortais de hoje são, sem dúvida, construídos sobre milhares de anos de teorias, superstições e crenças errôneas mortais. Essas teorias e superstições apresentaram aos homens uma falsa noção de Deus e uma falsa noção do homem como material e finito. Portanto, não basta que o Cientista Cristão, ao lidar com a chamada mente carnal por meio da Verdade, trate apenas do que parece ser a condição maligna; a Verdade pode desvendar, se necessário, o funcionamento do único mal ao longo de toda a suposta história dessa condição. Além disso, a compreensão que Jesus tinha de Deus e do ser espiritual permitiu-lhe discernir como o magnetismo animal poderia alegar operar mesmo no futuro. É evidente que a história material e a mortalidade, como as conhecemos hoje, foram fortemente influenciados por crenças como a existência de muitas mentes, a vida na matéria, a ignorância mortal, o medo, a necromancia — superstições de todos os tipos — todas crenças em um poder oposto a Deus. Por exemplo, qualquer pensador superficial pode discernir as muitas formas de servidão impostas à humanidade por meio de superstições de épocas passadas, como as crenças no acaso, no fatalismo, na astrologia e em muitos outros sistemas falsos dos quais nossa Líder fala em seu livro didático, “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras”.

O autor certa vez viu uma ilustração muito interessante da necessidade de, às vezes, lidar com tais sistemas falsos para vencer o pecado e a doença, a fim de libertar a humanidade. Um homem que havia sido alcoólatra por muitos anos procurou um terapêuta espiritual da Ciência Cristã em busca de ajuda. O curandeiro tentou fielmente curá-lo, mas sem sucesso. O terapêuta espiritual então percebeu que não havia chegado à raiz do problema e, assim, começou a entender que a verdade que Deus lhe dera sobre Si mesmo e sobre o homem como Sua imagem desvendaria o erro que governava a situação. Pouco tempo depois, ele encontrou o empregador do homem e perguntou-lhe como o paciente estava. O empregador respondeu: “Bem, No momento, ele está em uma situação muito ruim. Ele sempre piora quando a lua está cheia.” O praticante imediatamente percebeu a necessidade de compreender que o homem é sempre governado por Deus, a Mente divina, e não por qualquer lei falsa da astrologia. O resultado foi que o paciente foi ajudado imediatamente.

O praticante descobriu posteriormente que vários parentes desse homem haviam sofrido de insanidade. Sem dúvida, havia uma crença de que a superstição ou falsa lei chamada astrologia, que indicava tempos e estações, exercia uma influência controladora naquela família. A compreensão de Deus, e do homem como eternamente governado somente por Deus, quebrou essa superstição ou falsa crença e libertou o paciente da embriaguez. Mais tarde, um dos membros dessa família foi curado da insanidade pelo mesmo processo espiritual. Uma breve reflexão deveria convencer qualquer pessoa de que muitas das doenças de nossos dias se baseiam na falsa crença astrológica associada a tempos e estações. Mas na Mente divina, os únicos tempos e estações são os do constante desdobramento do bem infinito. A compreensão da presença e do governo infinitos de Deus destrói a falsa chamada lei da astrologia e seus efeitos.

Paulo Declara: “A nossa luta não é contra a carne e o sangue, mas contra os principados e potestades, contra os dominadores deste mundo tenebroso, contra as forças espirituais da maldade nas regiões celestes.” São as inúmeras superstições malignas e as chamadas leis da mente carnal que parecem produzir pecado, doença, morte — problemas de toda espécie. Os Cientistas Cristãos, portanto, guerreiam contra essas superstições e leis falsas. À medida que os Cientistas Cristãos aplicam, de forma consciente e consistente, sua compreensão da realidade espiritual para desvendar e destruir essas falsidades, eles provarão, com o tempo, a insignificância de todas as sutilezas da chamada mente maligna.

A tentativa de livrar os homens dessas coisas, lidando apenas com efeitos superficiais, jamais salvará a humanidade de seus problemas; na verdade, os sábios Cientistas Cristãos não tratam, primordialmente, da embriaguez ou do vício em drogas, das fases de diversas doenças, da guerra e da morte, mas da chamada mente carnal em suas diferentes crenças sobre leis materiais e superstições, que alegam produzir tais condições. Assim, eles propõem privar o “homem forte”, a chamada mente carnal, de “seus bens” por meio da compreensão e demonstração da verdade sobre Deus, a Mente divina, e sobre o homem à Sua semelhança.

A Ciência Cristã não é uma vaga crença sobre Deus e o homem; é a compreensão científica e demonstrável dos infinitos fatos espirituais de Deus e de Sua criação. A percepção desses fatos espirituais nos permite confrontar e destruir toda crença maligna da mente humana, provando assim a insignificância do mal. Esse processo científico de vencer o mal, por meio da compreensão e demonstração da verdade infinita sobre Deus e o homem, está muito distante do processo humano de simplesmente crer na totalidade de Deus e na insignificância do mal, ou do indesejável processo de tentar aprender sobre as operações do mal a partir de uma perspectiva humana.

Em Ciência e Saúde, Mary Baker Eddy escreve, na página 271: “Em latim, a palavra traduzida como discípulo significa estudante; e a palavra indica que o poder de cura não era um dom sobrenatural para esses aprendizes, mas o resultado de sua compreensão espiritual cultivada da Ciência divina, que seu Mestre demonstrava curando os enfermos e pecadores.”

O Cientista Cristão que adquire essa “compreensão espiritual cultivada” jamais poderá temer o mal. O efeito dessa compreensão é expor a insignificância do mal e, assim, destruir qualquer medo do mal. Portanto, todo sábio Cientista Cristão se esforçará para assimilar em seu pensamento os infinitos fatos sobre Deus e Sua criação, pois sabe que a atuação dessas verdades divinas no pensamento lhe permitirá perceber as formas do mal e, assim, destruí-las, bem como seus supostos efeitos — pecado, doença e morte. Dessa forma, ele comprovará para si mesmo a totalidade de Deus e a insignificância do mal.

Overcoming Evil

IN considering the question of dealing with evil through Truth, two statements of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, stand out as beacon lights in the thought of the student of Christian Science. The first of these is to be found in her book Miscellaneous Writings (p. 334), where she writes, “You must find error to be nothing: then, and only then, do you handle it in Science.” The second statement is in her book “Retrospection and Introspection” (p. 64), and reads as follows: “It is scientific to abide in conscious harmony, in health-giving, deathless Truth and Love. To do this, mortals must first open their eyes to all the illusive forms, methods, and subtlety of error, in order that the illusion, error, may be destroyed; if this is not done, mortals will become the victims of error.”

From these two statements it is evident that Mrs. Eddy expected Christian Scientists to prove the nothingness of error in its every phase through a comprehensive understanding of the truth about God and man. No one realized more clearly than our Leader the necessity for proving the nothingness of error, and no one saw more certainly that the nothingness of error would never be proved merely by saying it is nothing and leaving it there, but by demonstrating the infinitude of Truth.

Christian Science has come to analyze, expose, and destroy evil of every kind. It is certain that evil would never expose, analyze, or destroy itself. Therefore, whatever helps in such a process must be of God. All that evil desires is to be left alone, so that it may continue to delude and destroy mortals. Christian Scientists, however, have accepted the joyful responsibility of demonstrating God’s allness and the nothingness of evil in its every phase; in fact, wise Christian Scientists recognize that they must follow Jesus’ command, “Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay.” They must therefore understand, assert, and affirm the truth about God and about man in His infinite Science, and with this spiritual understanding they must also learn to deny the suppositional activity of evil in its every subtlety.

Christian Science teaches very clearly that ignorance of error and its operations is no protection against error; nor is the belief of evil as something real a protection against evil. But the spiritual understanding of God and of the true man, which uncovers, exposes, and destroys evil in its myriad illusions, and so proves its nothingness, is essential to the progress of every Christian Scientist and of all humanity.

Christian Science teaches that all evil is included in the so-called mortal or carnal mind, which Jesus described as a liar, and its effect as the liar’s lie. Mrs. Eddy has used the term “animal magnetism” to include both the liar and its lie. A close study of the teachings of Jesus and of Mrs. Eddy will show clearly that they both recognized the necessity of dealing with the lie—including sin, disease, and death—by first dealing through Truth with the liar —so-called mortal or carnal mind. Christian Scientists, therefore, are engaged in destroying the effects of the so-called carnal mind, sin, disease, death, and mortality, by first denying so-called mortal or carnal mind, with the spiritual understanding that there is but one divine Mind —God.

It is evident that ever since our Leader discerned the necessity of teaching Christian Scientists how to uncover and destroy the subtleties of the carnal mind through the understanding of infinite Truth, there have been occasions when the evil one has tried to convince Christian Scientists that this divine process is not necessary, but that it is sufficient to declare God’s allness and to leave evil alone. Every student of Christian Science would be well advised once in a while to read our Leader’s article entitled “Watching versus Watching Out” The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 232. He would also do well to remember that our Leader indicates that while unfaithful students may declare that she deals with animal magnetism, they often decline to have aught to do with it. It was the rare spirituality of Christ Jesus and of Mrs. Eddy that enabled them to see both the necessity and the way of dealing through divine Science with animal magnetism in its various beliefs and manifestations. As Christian Scientists become more spiritually-minded, they too will awaken more fully to this divine privilege.

Christian Science is teaching men how to forestall evil. This divine process of uncovering and destroying evil is solely for the purpose of proving the nothingness of evil, and so destroying it through understanding Truth. For centuries men have suffered from the delusions of the evil one, which, according to Paul, “opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” Men have not, however, understood what was binding them. In this deluded mental state they have accepted the effects of the carnal mind, such as sin, disease, war, and death, as realities, and even as God-given conditions. Is Christian Science, then, going to make animal magnetism more real when it uncovers to us the workings and the falsity of this evil influence, and shows us how to destroy its supposed reality? Certainly not!

The wise Christian Scientist knows that it is necessary for him at all times, every minute of his life indeed, to keep before him the allness of God, divine Mind. He knows also, however, that it is wise for him to apply his spiritual understanding of the ever present divine Mind and its infinite ideas to the annihilation of the delusions of animal magnetism. Should he continuously think of the workings of evil to the exclusion of God’s allness, he would be reversing the proper way of deliverance, and so prevent the scientific overcoming of evil. The fact is that nothing can expose, analyze, and destroy evil but the spiritual understanding which knows that God is All. Therefore, it is all-important that Christian Scientists, in their efforts to deliver men from the delusions of animal magnetism through the divinely scientific process of uncovering, exposing, and destroying its subtleties, should have ever before them the fact that God, divine Mind, is, always has been, and forever will be, the only Mind.

Mortal thought and experience today are undoubtedly built up upon thousands of years of mortal theories, superstitions, and erroneous beliefs. These theories and superstitions have presented to men a false sense of God and a false sense of man as material and finite. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the Christian Scientist, in dealing with the so-called carnal mind through Truth, to deal only with what seems to be the evil condition; but Truth can uncover, if necessary, the workings of the one evil throughout the entire supposed history of the condition. Moreover, Jesus’ understanding of God and of spiritual being enabled him to discern how animal magnetism might claim to operate even in a future. It is evident that material history and mortality, as we know them to-day, have been strongly influenced by such beliefs as minds many, life in matter, mortal ignorance, fear, necromancy, —superstition of every kind,—all beliefs in a power opposed to God. For instance, any superficial thinker can discern the many forms of bondage imposed upon mankind through such superstitions of past ages as the beliefs in chance, fatalism, astrology, and many other false systems of which our Leader speaks in her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

The writer once saw a very interesting illustration of the necessity of sometimes dealing with such false systems in overcoming sin and disease, in order to free mankind. One who had been a drunkard for many years came to a practitioner for help. The practitioner tried faithfully to heal him, but without result. The practitioner then realized that he had not got at the root of the trouble, and so he began to know that the truth which God gave him about Himself and about man as His likeness would uncover the governing error of the situation. A short time after he met the man’s employer and asked him how the patient was getting on. The employer replied: “Well, at present he is in a very bad way. He is always worse when the moon is full.” The practitioner at once saw the need of realizing that man is always governed by God, the divine Mind, and not by any false law of astrology. The result was that the patient was helped immediately. The practitioner afterwards discovered that several of this man’s relatives had suffered from insanity. Undoubtedly there had been a belief that the superstitious or false law called astrology, which indicated times and seasons, was a controlling influence in that family. The understanding of God, and of man as forever governed by God alone, had broken that superstition or false belief and released the patient from drunkenness. Later on one of the members of this family was healed from insanity through the same spiritual process. A moment’s thought should convince anyone that many of the diseases of our day are based on the false astrological belief thus attached to times and seasons. But in the divine Mind the only times and seasons are those of the constant unfolding of infinite good. The understanding of God’s infinite presence and government destroys the false so-called law of astrology and its effects.

Paul declares, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” It is the myriad evil superstitions and so-called laws of the carnal mind which seem to produce sin, disease, death—trouble of every kind. Christian Scientists, therefore, war with these superstitions and false laws. As Christian Scientists conscientiously and consistently apply their understanding of spiritual reality to the uncovering and destruction of these falsities, they will in time prove the nothingness of all the subtle workings of this evil so-called mind. The attempt to deliver men from these things by dealing in thought with superficial effects only will never save mankind from its troubles; in fact, wise Christian Scientists do not deal, primarily, with drunkenness or the drug habit, with phases of various diseases, with war and with death, but with the so-called carnal mind in its different beliefs of material law and superstition, which claim to produce such conditions. Thus they propose to rob the “strong man,” the so-called carnal mind, of “his goods” through understanding and demonstrating the truth about God, the divine Mind, and about man in His likeness.

Christian Science is no vague belief about God and man; it is the scientific, demonstrable understanding of the infinite spiritual facts of God and His creation. The perception of these spiritual facts enables us to meet and destroy every evil belief of the human mind, and so prove the nothingness of evil. This scientific process of overcoming evil, through understanding and demonstrating the infinite truth about God and man, is very far removed from the human process of merely believing in God’s allness and evil’s nothingness, or from the undesirable process of trying to learn about the operations of evil on a human basis.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, on page 271, “In Latin the word rendered disciple signifies student; and the word indicates that the power of healing was not a supernatural gift to those learners, but the result of their cultivated spiritual understanding of the divine Science, which their Master demonstrated by healing the sick and sinning.” The Christian Scientist who gains this “cultivated spiritual understanding” can never fear evil. The effect of this understanding is to expose evil’s nothingness, and so destroy any fear of evil. Every wise Christian Scientist, therefore, will strive to assimilate in his thinking the infinite facts about God and His creation, because he knows that the activity of these divine truths in thought will enable him to perceive the modes of evil and thus destroy them and their suppositional effects —sin, disease, and death. In this way he will prove to himself God’s allness and the nothingness of evil.
