O Mal é Apenas Suposição

TODO erro — o oposto da verdade — é suposição. Os mortais parecem primeiro aceitar o erro como real e, em seguida, lentamente abandonar sua posição falsa em favor da verdade. Além disso, à medida que a verdade é aceita, eles percebem que o erro, antes aparentemente real, não passava de uma suposição e que, mesmo no auge de sua suposta influência ou poder, não tinha realidade ou existência, exceto na crença. Quão impossível seria hoje para nós acreditarmos que a Terra é plana e que o Sol gira em torno da Terra, ou que qualquer pessoa que navegasse longe o suficiente cairia da borda do mundo! Tudo isso já foi aceito como verdade; no entanto, nunca foi nada além de suposição, suposição que, como vemos, era meramente o inverso da verdade.

A educação transformou de maneira semelhante o pensamento religioso, e alguns dos erros antes aceitos pela maioria das denominações religiosas são agora geralmente reconhecidos como suposições. Antigamente, acreditava-se que Satanás era tão real quanto Deus, e o inferno tão real quanto o céu. À medida que a ignorância dá lugar ao conhecimento e a Onipresença e o Onipotência de Deus são compreendidos, percebe-se que Satanás, assim chamado, não pode, de fato, ser real, estar presente ou ter poder. O inferno, como lugar de punição eterna, também deixou de ser uma ideia relevante; e o céu é reconhecido como uma condição mental e espiritual, não como um lugar. Algumas das características do inferno ainda estão ligadas às nossas crenças sobre a vida humana, que parece repleta de males discordantes, decididamente opostos ao que esperamos do céu. Pecado, sofrimento, pobreza, tristeza e morte ainda parecem ser um inferno muito real nas experiências dos mortais.

A Ciência Cristã traz a certeza de que somente as suposições ignorantes da chamada mente mortal podem dar a impressão de realidade a qualquer erro, por mais perturbadoras que sejam suas alegações ou por mais que o testemunho sensorial material possa declarar a seu respeito. Ela vai além disso, pois nos mostra como distinguir definitivamente entre o erro, que reside na mente mortal, e a verdade, que é a expressão da Mente divina. Por meio da razão, da revelação e da comprovação, podemos chegar à compreensão correta de todas as coisas. Sabemos que Deus é Tudo e é a Verdade, e, portanto, somente a Verdade possui existência ou realidade, e que ela deve ser eterna, harmoniosa e boa, as características imutáveis de Deus. Que visão de salvação imediata se apresenta diante de nós quando compreendemos firmemente que a Verdade é tudo e somente o bem! O mal, portanto, não pode ser verdade; deve ser uma mentira.

Nossa salvação de qualquer crença maligna começa na firme negação de sua realidade, por mais real que possa parecer; e devemos ter tanta certeza do nosso direito de assumir essa posição quanto temos de que não pode haver um Satanás vermelho e flamejante opondo-se para sempre à vontade do Deus onisciente, onipresente e onipotente.

Uma vez conscientes de que é a falsa suposição que nos prende à discórdia, buscamos uma compreensão correta do Ser, antecipando nossa libertação do erro escravizante; pois recordamos com alegre confiança a promessa de nosso Mestre, que disse: “Conhecereis a verdade, e a verdade vos libertará”. O reconhecimento de uma posição falsa já é, por si só, um grande passo na direção certa. A Bíblia, iluminada por “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras” e outros escritos de Mary Baker Eddy, nos conduzirá ao restante do caminho rumo a uma compreensão definitiva de toda a verdade. Jesus destacou o poder edificante da Palavra de Deus e nossa necessidade de recorrer a ela, pois disse: “Vós errais, porque não conheceis as Escrituras nem o poder de Deus”. Ele também não subestimou a importância da verdade que ele mesmo ensinava, pois disse: “Eu sou o caminho, a verdade e a vida; ninguém vem ao Pai senão por mim”.

Mas alguém pode perguntar: que direito vocês têm de afirmar que a Ciência Cristã interpreta as Escrituras corretamente? A resposta pode ser encontrada nas palavras de nosso Mestre aos discípulos de João Batista, quando vieram para saber se Jesus era aquele que havia de vir: “Ide e contai a João o que vistes e ouvistes”. Ou talvez seja nas palavras de Tiago: “Mostrarei a minha fé pelas minhas obras”. Certamente, a compreensão da verdade que nos libertará não pode ser chamada de compreensão a menos que nos liberte à medida que a alcançamos. É assim que a Ciência Cristã prova a veracidade de sua afirmação: seus fiéis seguidores são capacitados por ela a curar os enfermos, como Jesus esperava e ordenou, e de muitas outras maneiras a demonstrar que Cristo, a Verdade, está disponível agora como Salvador da humanidade.

O Cientista Cristão recorre à Bíblia e à Ciência e Saúde, e a partir desses dois livros inspirados aprende que a Verdade é boa, e que o bem é Deus, o EU SOU, o Tudo-em-tudo, que exclui todo o resto, e que, portanto, não temos mais direito de nos apegarmos ao mal como real, ou como tendo poder sobre o homem, do que temos de acreditar em qualquer outro testemunho desses sentidos enganosos que nos fariam pensar que o sol gira em torno da Terra todos os dias.

A negação da realidade do mal deve ser seguida por uma inversão dos fatos aparentes; pois, como já vimos, estes são os supostos opostos da verdade. Isso revelará as realidades do ser, o bem do qual somos herdeiros como filhos de Deus. É esse processo que está provando que Satanás é irreal, extinguindo o inferno e trazendo Deus e o Seu céu para a consciência humana.

Despertemos para o fato de que o próximo grande passo é inverter o conceito falso do homem, destruir os erros que o consideram material, pecador, doente, moribundo e imperfeito, e aceitá-lo como imagem e semelhança de Deus. Então, essa Mente estará em nós, “a mesma que estava em Cristo Jesus”, que ordenou: “Sede vós, pois, perfeitos, como perfeito é o vosso Pai que está nos céus”.

Jesus sempre demonstrou o seu poder para manter o conceito do homem como perfeito. Ao desfazer toda mentira que se manifestava nas discórdias da matéria, ele curou o pecado e a doença e venceu a morte, cumprindo assim a lei de Deus, a lei que, quando praticada, destrói todo o mal. Além disso, ensinou os pescadores de espírito simples a fazerem o mesmo; e está registrado que Pedro finalmente alcançou aquela compreensão clara da espiritualidade e perfeição do homem que o capacitou até mesmo a ressuscitar os mortos.

Hoje, como disse Mary Baker Eddy na página 450 de Ciência e Saúde, “O Cientista Cristão se alistou para diminuir o mal, a doença e a morte; e ele os vencerá compreendendo sua insignificância e a totalidade de Deus, ou do bem”; e ela acrescenta: “O Cientista Cristão sabe que são erros de crença, que a Verdade pode e irá destruir”. Ele está fielmente prosseguindo neste grande serviço, e provas maravilhosas da presença constante de Deus estão sendo dadas à humanidade na cura de toda forma de discórdia, seja doença, tristeza, fracasso, acidente, inimizade ou a chamada doença incurável. Na página 102 de Ciência e Saúde, aparecem estas palavras, que resumem toda a questão: “A humanidade precisa aprender que o mal não é poder. Seu suposto despotismo é apenas uma fase do nada.” E na página seguinte, Mary Baker Eddy escreve: “A ciência da mente é totalmente separada de qualquer conhecimento impertinente e superficial, porque a ciência da mente é de Deus e demonstra o Princípio divino, realizando apenas os propósitos do bem. O máximo do bem é o Deus infinito e Sua ideia, o Tudo-em-tudo. O mal é uma mentira hipotética.”

Evil Only Supposititious

ALL error—the opposite of the truth—is suppositional. Mortals seem first to accept error as real, and then slowly abandon their false position for the truth. Moreover, as the truth is accepted, they perceive that the once seemingly real error was nothing but a supposition, and that even at the height of its supposed influence or power it had no reality or existence except in belief. How impossible it would be to-day for us to believe that the world is flat and that the sun goes around the earth, or that anyone who sailed far enough would fall off the edge of the world! All this was once accepted as true; yet it was never anything but supposition, supposition which, as we see, was merely the reverse of the truth.

Education has similarly transformed religious thought, and some of the errors once accepted by most of the religious denominations are now generally recognized as suppositions. Satan was formerly believed to be as real as God, and hell as real as heaven. As ignorance gives way to knowledge and the all-presence and all-power of God are understood, it is seen that Satan, so called, can indeed neither be real, present, nor have power. Hell, as a place of eternal punishment, has also largely gone; and heaven is recognized as a mental, spiritual condition, not a place. Some of the characteristics of hell are still attached to our beliefs about human life, which seems full of discordant evils decidedly the opposite of what we hope for in heaven. Sin, suffering, poverty, sorrow, and death still seem to be a very real hell in the experiences of mortals.

Christian Science brings the assurance that only the ignorant suppositions of so-called mortal mind can seem to give reality to any error, however disturbing its claims or whatever material sense testimony may declare in relation to it. It goes farther than this, for it shows us how to distinguish definitely between error, which is held in mortal mind, and the truth, which is the expression of divine Mind. Through reason, revelation, and proof we can arrive at the right idea of all things. We know that God is All and is Truth, and therefore that Truth alone has existence or reality, and that it must be eternal, harmonious, and good, the unchangeable characteristics of God. What a vision of immediate salvation lies before us when we firmly grasp that Truth is all, and only good! Evil, therefore, cannot be true; it must be a lie.

Our salvation from any evil belief begins in the firm denial of its reality, however real it may seem to be; and we should be just as sure of our right to take this stand as we are that there cannot be a red, flaming Satan forever opposing the will of the all-wise, all-present, and all-powerful God.

Once aware that it is false supposition which binds us to discord, we seek a right understanding of Being, anticipating our liberation from enslaving error; for we recall with joyful confidence the promise of our Master, who said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The acknowledgment of a false position is in itself a long stride in the right direction. The Bible, illumined by “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, will lead us the rest of the way to an ultimate understanding of all truth. Jesus pointed out the uplifting power of the Word of God and our need to turn to it; for he said, “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” Nor did he underrate the importance of the truth he himself was teaching; for he said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

But, someone may say, what right have you to claim that Christian Science interprets the Scriptures correctly? The answer may be given in the words of our Master to the disciples of John the Baptist when they came to learn if Jesus were he that should come: “Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard.” Or it might be in the words of James: “I will shew thee my faith by my works.” Certainly the understanding of the truth which will make us free cannot rightly be called understanding unless it frees us as we gain it. That is how Christian Science proves its claim to be true: its faithful followers are enabled by it to heal the sick as Jesus expected and commanded them to do, and in many other ways to demonstrate that Christ, Truth, is even now available as the Saviour of mankind.

The Christian Scientist turns to the Bible and Science and Health, and from these two inspired books learns that Truth is good, and that good is God. the I AM, the All-in-all, who excludes all else, and that therefore we have no more right to cling to evil as real, or as having power over man, than we have to believe any other testimony of those deceptive senses which would make us think the sun goes round the earth each day.

The denial of the reality of evil must be followed by a reversal of the seeming facts; for, as we have already seen, these are the supposed opposites of the truth. This will reveal the realities of being, the good to which we are heirs as the sons of God. It is this process which is proving Satan unreal, and is extinguishing hell and bringing God and His heaven into their own to human consciousness.

Let us awake to the fact that the next great step is to reverse the false concept of man, to destroy the errors which suppose him to be material, sinning, sick, dying, and imperfect, and to accept him as the image and likeness of God. Then that Mind will be in us “which was also in Christ Jesus,” who commanded, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

Jesus proved his power always to maintain the concept of man as perfect. By reversing every lie that manifested itself in the discords of matter, he healed sin and sickness and overcame death, thus fulfilling the law of God, the law which when practiced destroys all evil. Moreover, he taught the simple-minded fishermen to do the same; and it is recorded that Peter finally arrived at that clear understanding of the spirituality and perfection of man which enabled him also even to raise the dead.

To-day, as Mrs. Eddy has said on page 450 of Science and Health, “The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good;” and she adds, “The Christian Scientist knows that they are errors of belief, which Truth can and will destroy.” He is faithfully pressing forward in this great service, and marvelous proofs of the ever-presence of God are being given to mankind in the healing of every form of discord, be it sickness, sorrow, failure, accident, enmity, or so-called incurable disease. On page 102 of Science and Health appear these words, which summarize the whole question: “Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so-called despotism is but a phase of nothingness.” And on the next page Mrs. Eddy writes: “Mind-science is wholly separate from any half-way impertinent knowledge, because Mind-science is of God and demonstrates the divine Principle, working out the purposes of good only. The maximum of good is the infinite God and His idea, the All-in-all. Evil is a suppositional lie.”
