O Amor É Eterno Agora

Tudo o que ajuda uma pessoa pode ajudar outra. Toda afirmação da Verdade tem um poder acumulativo. Transmitir aos outros o que nos foi útil, isso assim nos eleva e os eleva; pois

O Amor te liberta,

E Ele me eleva,

como diz a Sra. Eddy em seu poema “Satisfeito” Christian Science Journal, fevereiro de 1900.

Cinco postulados, lidos recentemente, de um autor desconhecido para esse escritor, foram muito úteis. São os seguintes:

“Deus é a única Causa.

O Espírito é a única Substância.

O amor é a única Força.

A harmonia é a única Lei.

Agora é o único Tempo.”

A última frase é extremamente impressionante: “Agora é o único tempo.”

Nossa Líder diz: “A eternidade, não o tempo, expressa o pensamento da Vida, e o tempo não faz parte da eternidade” (Ciência e Saúde, p. 468); enquanto no Salmo 90 lemos: “Mil anos aos teus olhos são como o dia de ontem que passou, e como uma vigília da noite.” Em sua segunda epístola, o apóstolo Pedro expressa a mesma ideia: “Mas, amados, não ignoreis uma coisa: que um dia para o Senhor é como mil anos, e mil anos como um dia.”

Um estudo cuidadoso da Oração do Senhor e da “declaração científica do ser” (Ciência e Saúde, p. 468) mostra que os verbos, predominante em ambos, estão no presente [do indicativo]. A palavra “é” ocorre 11 vezes na última declaração. De fato, como Paulo verdadeiramente exclama: “Agora é o tempo aceitável; eis aqui agora o dia da salvação”. Salvação de quê? Salvação de tudo o que nos perturba. Somos propensos a pensar que, por termos sofrido no passado, devemos continuar a sofrer, a arrastar para sempre a corrente da nossa terrível forja, como o prisioneiro romano acorrentado a um cadáver. Lembrando, em vez de “esquecer as coisas que ficaram para trás “, como aconselha o apóstolo, algemamos o presente e hipotecamos o futuro, e então nos perguntamos por que não somos livres. Os três chamados períodos: passado, presente e futuro, são de arbitragem humana. Deus conhece apenas um “eterno agora”.

“Agora somos filhos de Deus.” Esta leitura da primeira epístola de João chega até nós todos os domingos, vinda de nossos púlpitos, e cabe a nós dar-lhe o peso que merece na consciência. A mesma leitura prossegue com a promessa do que seremos quando despertarmos à semelhança divina. De fato, o homem está nessa semelhança, mas os mortais devem despertar para essa verdade; caso contrário, estão sonhando. Cientistas naturais nos dizem que os sonhos duram apenas um ou dois segundos; no entanto, diz-se que os homens viveram uma vida inteira em um sonho. A visão pode ser imaginária, fantasiosa e vaga, mas pode-se sofrer nela, e sofrer terrivelmente, a menos que se acorde. Saindo de tal condição de sofrimento, agradecemos a Deus por ter sido apenas um sonho. Na realidade, não tinha poder para nos ferir. Mas se nos apegarmos à visão, recusando-nos a despertar, o sofrimento deve continuar.

Assim como na Ciência Cristã aprendemos que a verdade do ser é incessante, contínua, assim também passamos a ver que o presente é perfeito. “Não há passado discordante, presente nublado, futuro temido”, disse um hábil Cientista Cristão. Tudo o que precisamos nos preocupar é que nenhuma nuvem se instale sobre o nosso presente, e que o futuro (como o chamamos) possamos deixar em segurança com Deus, a quem ele pertence. Não somos donos do “futuro”, portanto não podemos hipotecá-lo.

Qualquer bom dicionário é uma ajuda para aqueles que estão tentando entender a Ciência Cristã. Sonhos são descritos como imaginários, e a palavra crença é mostrada como uma questão de opinião, ou como poderíamos dizer, uma opinião sobre a matéria, se pudéssemos tornar a matéria senciente. Doença e pecado são, portanto, crenças na realidade do irreal, do material. Por outro lado, a lei é definida como “uma regra de ordem ou conduta estabelecida pela autoridade”; a lei é, portanto, a verdade. O sofrimento pode ser chamado de lei, mas nunca é outra coisa senão uma crença. Lei é a Vida manifestada. Lei é o Amor manifestado, a ordem daquela expressão da Verdade que nos torna livres.

Diz-se que Dante mediu sua aproximação ao Paraíso pela luz do amor ou da compreensão divina que incidia sobre as feições elevadas de Beatriz. Foi o amor ou o conhecimento de Deus, a Verdade, que fez o rosto de Moisés brilhar. Foi a consciência de Deus sempre presente que glorificou Jesus, nosso Guia, e hoje repousa, como uma coroa, sobre nossa querida Líder.

Love’s Eternal Now

Whatever helps one person may help another. Every statement in Truth has an accumulative power. Passing along to others what has been helpful to ourselves, thus lifts us and lifts them; for

Love looseth thee,

And lifteth me,

as Mrs. Eddy says in her poem “Satisfied” Christian Science Journal, February, 1900).

Five postulates, recently read, from an author unknown to the writer, have been very helpful. They are as follows: “God is the only cause. Spirit is the only substance. Love is the only force. Harmony is the only law. Now is the only time.” The last sentence is exceedingly impressive: “Now is the only time.” Our Leader says: “Eternity. not time, expresses the thought of Life, and time is no part of eternity” (Science and Health, p. 468); while in the 90th Psalm we read: “A thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.” In his second epistle the apostle Peter expresses the same idea: “But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

A careful study of the Lord’s Prayer, and of the “scientific statement of being” (Science and Health, p. 468) shows the present tense to predominate in both. The word “is” occurs eleven times in the latter statement. Indeed, as Paul truly exclaims, “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Salvation from what? Salvation from whatever troubles us. We are apt to think that because we suffered in the past, we must continue to suffer, to drag forever the chain of our fearful forging, like the Roman prisoner chained to a corpse. Remembering, instead of “forgetting those things which are behind,” as the apostle advises, we manacle the present and mortgage the future, and then wonder why we are not free. The three so-called periods, past, present, and future, are of human arbitration. God knows only an “eternal now.”

“Now are we the sons of God.” This reading from the first epistle of John reaches us every Sunday from our pulpits, and it is ours to give it the weight it deserves in consciousness. The same reading proceeds to give promise of what we shall be when we awaken in the divine likeness. Of a truth man is in that likeness, but mortals must waken to that truth; otherwise, they are dreaming. Natural scientists tell us that dreams last but a second or two; yet men are said to have lived a lifetime in a dream. Imaginary, fanciful, vague the vision may be, but one can suffer therein, and suffer fearfully, unless awakened. Coming out of such a suffering condition, we thank God that it was but a dream. In reality it had no power to hurt us. but if we cling to the vision, refuse to awaken, the suffering must continue.

As in Christian Science we learn that the truth of being is unceasing, continuous, so we come to see that the present is perfect. “There is no discordant past, no clouded present, no dreaded future,” said an able Christian Scientist. All we have to concern ourselves with is that no clouds settle upon our present, and the future (as we call it) we can safely leave with God, to whom it belongs. We do not own the “future,” so we cannot mortgage it.

Any good dictionary is a help to those who are trying to understand Christian Science. Dreams are described as imaginary, and the word belief is shown to be a matter of opinion, or as we might say, an opinion of matter, if one could make matter sentient. Sickness and sin are thus beliefs in the reality of the unreal, the material. On the other hand, law is defined as “a rule of order or conduct established by authority;” the law is therefore the truth. Suffering may be called a law, but it is never other than a belief. Law is Life manifested. Law is Love manifested, the order of that expression of Truth which makes us free.

Dante is said to have measured his approach to Paradise by the light of love or divine understanding which played upon the uplifted features of Beatrice. It was the love or knowledge of God, Truth, that caused the face of Moses to shine. It was the consciousness of God as ever present that glorified Jesus, our Wayshower, and today it rests, like a coronal, upon our dear Leader.
