O Domínio do Homem

As Escrituras nos informam que Deus criou o homem à Sua imagem e semelhança; e Mary Baker Eddy afirma na página 475 de “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras” que o homem “é a ideia composta de Deus, incluindo todas as ideias certas”. Como tal, o homem é, sempre foi e sempre será perfeito, assim como o Pai celestial é perfeito, vivendo hoje em perfeição e harmonia. A crença corpórea do homem nada mais é do que uma falsificação vil do homem real. Como a mente mortal, ou os sentidos materiais, não têm conhecimento dos fatos espirituais do ser, os sentidos corpóreos do homem são apenas um conceito ignorante do que o homem de Deus realmente é.
Como entendemos Deus, conforme ensinado na Ciência Cristã, não o concebemos como dissonante, doente ou enfermo, nem como alguém que envelhece ou manifesta senilidade e decrepitude. Pensamos n’Ele, antes, como o mesmo ontem, hoje e para sempre. Aprendemos a conhecê-Lo como Vida, que é imortal e imutável; como Amor divino infinito, sempre presente e universal; e reconhecemos e admitimos n’Ele como a única Mente onisciente e onipresente, que o homem reflete.
Só podemos conhecer a Deus como o homem O expressa; e devemos nos esforçar para conhecer o homem como Deus o criou, e perceber que nem Deus nem o homem, à Sua semelhança, jamais conheceram ou manifestaram algo além de harmonia e perfeição.
Agora, Deus dá domínio ao homem. Esse domínio foi demonstrado muitas vezes, como está registrado no Antigo e no Novo Testamento, na realização dos chamados prodígios. As murmurações dos israelitas incrédulos foram silenciadas repetidas vezes quando suas necessidades foram supridas no deserto. Quando Moisés golpeou a rocha em Horebe com sua vara, dela brotou água para suprir a necessidade do momento. Elias fez com que as águas do Jordão se dividissem, para que ele e Eliseu pudessem passar para o outro lado. E em muitas outras ocasiões, o domínio do homem foi comprovado.
No tempo devido, Cristo Jesus, conhecido como o Guia, veio ao mundo para ensinar aqueles que quisessem ouvir e aprender a usar o domínio que Deus concedeu ao homem. Ele fez isso e realizou muitas obras maravilhosas, chamadas milagres. Ele as realizou em direta oposição às leis materiais e às crenças humanas, mas em conformidade com a lei divina, da qual Ele tinha perfeito entendimento. Assim, Ele provou a disponibilidade e a demonstrabilidade da lei espiritual, ilustrando o que ensinava.
Além de curar todos os tipos de doenças e pecados e ressuscitar os mortos, Ele acalmou os ventos e tranquilizou as ondas. Demonstrou proteção divina quando escapou de seus perseguidores. A lei da gravidade foi invertida quando Ele caminhou sobre as águas. As crenças de tempo e espaço foram anuladas quando, após entrar em um barco, Ele se viu imediatamente do outro lado do lago.
A provisão do que faltava para completar a festa de casamento se manifestou quando Ele transformou a água em vinho. E em Cafarnaum, quando chegaram os cobradores do tributo, Jesus disse a Simão Pedro, que estava com ele, que encontraria o dinheiro na boca de um peixe.
Ora, essas coisas não foram feitas meramente para acomodar ou, primordialmente, para atender a emergências humanas, mas para mostrar que a lei espiritual, quando aplicada correta e com compreensão, opera em qualquer circunstância humana. Devido à sua natureza divina, ela reverte, anula, anula e destrói toda crença humana a respeito da lei física ou material. À medida que se aprofunda na compreensão desses fatos, por meio de provas e demonstrações, chega-se naturalmente a uma percepção mais clara dos direitos do homem como filho de Deus — aliás, do seu dever de se valer, em todas as circunstâncias, do domínio que Deus lhe concedeu sobre toda crença na matéria ou no mal.
Certa vez, quando Jesus curou um homem cego de nascença, seus discípulos lhe perguntaram: “Mestre, quem pecou,este homem ou seus pais, para que ele nascesse cego?” Jesus respondeu: “Nem este homem pecou,nem seus pais; mas foi para que as obras de Deus se manifestassem nele. É necessário que Eu faça as obras daquele que Me enviou, enquanto é dia; a noite vem, quando ninguém pode trabalhar. Enquanto Eu estou no mundo, Eu sou a luz do mundo.”
Naquele momento, Jesus previu não apenas sua traição e crucificação, mas também a longa e escura noite do materialismo que se seguiria à sua ascensão, quando a luz da Verdade, que sua vinda acendera, pareceria oscilar e se extinguir, e a escuridão espiritual se abateria sobre o mundo. Mas ele não deixou os discípulos sem consolo; profetizou e prometeu um novo alvorecer do Cristo, a Verdade, designado por ele como o “Consolador” ou “Espírito Santo”, que o Pai enviaria em seu nome para ensinar todas as coisas e trazer à memória todas as coisas que ele havia ensinado e demonstrado.
Mais de dezoito séculos se passaram antes que essa promessa se cumprisse na Ciência Cristã e a profecia se tornasse realidade. Em 1866, Mary Baker Eddy descobriu a lei do Espírito, que cura e salva pelo mesmo processo metafísico ensinado por Jesus. e demonstrou; e deu à sua descoberta o nome de “Ciência Cristã”. À medida que compreendemos, através do estudo desta Ciência divina, que o único dever de cada um na Terra é expressar Deus, o bem, a vida assume um novo aspecto e viver torna-se significativo. Jesus dedicou-se incessantemente aos assuntos de seu Pai. Assim, ao repreender e destruir toda forma de erro que se apresenta a nós, seguimos os seus passos e demonstramos o domínio que Deus concedeu ao homem.
Na página 10 de Ciência e Saúde, Mary Baker Eddy afirma: “A Ciência Cristã revela a necessidade de vencer o mundo, a carne e o mal, destruindo assim todo o erro.” Jesus disse: “Conhecereis a verdade, e a verdade vos libertará.” Quando compreendemos que a lei de Deus, O Princípio Divino, é a Única Lei, e que o universo espiritual e o homem são governados por e em conformidade com esta lei suprema, começamos a entender o que significa “conhecer a verdade” e do que devemos ser libertados.
Quando nosso entendimento da multiplicação avança o suficiente para percebermos que dez vezes um milhão é tão facilmente calculado pelas leis da matemática quanto dez vezes dez, aceitamos esse fato e não damos muita importância a ele, além da necessidade de realizar o cálculo quando o problema o exige; mas que o Princípio divino que sustenta o universo possa operar em nossos assuntos humanos pode parecer irracional e impossível, quase demais para se esperar.
Somente quando renunciarmos à nossa dependência da mente mortal e da crença humana, e permitirmos que a Mente que estava em Cristo Jesus esteja também em nós, nossa pequena embarcação dos assuntos humanos será conduzida com segurança pelas águas turbulentas da experiência.
“Conhecer a verdade” é um processo mental. Ao conhecer a verdade, Jesus foi capaz de multiplicar instantaneamente alguns pães e peixes em um número suficiente para alimentar milhares de pessoas. A lei que desabrocha as pétalas de miríades de flores e veste com majestosa beleza cada pássaro e borboleta, certamente tingirá nossas vidas com matizes celestiais e revelará a cada amanhecer o santo propósito de Deus, quando depositarmos toda a nossa confiança Nele. Então “conheceremos a verdade”, que é a compreensão do domínio do homem sobre o mundo, a carne — todo erro.

Man’s Dominion

THE Scriptures inform us that God created man in His own likeness; and Mrs. Eddy says on page 475 of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” that man “is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas.” As such, then, man is, always has been, and always will be perfect, even as the Father in heaven is perfect, living to-day in perfection and harmony. The corporeal belief of man is but a base counterfeit of the real man. Because mortal mind, or material sense, has no knowledge of the spiritual facts of being, the corporeal sense of man is but an ignorant concept of what God’s man really is.
As we understand God, as taught in Christian Science, we do not think of Him as discordant, sick, or diseased, or as growing old or manifesting senility and decrepitude. We think of Him, rather, as the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. We learn to know Him as Life, which is deathless and unchanging; as infinite divine Love, ever present and universal; and we recognize and acknowledge Him as the one omniscient, omnipresent Mind, which man reflects.
We can know God only as man expresses Him; and we should strive to know man as God creates him, and to realize that neither God nor man in His likeness has ever known or manifested anything but harmony and perfection.
Now God gives man dominion. This dominion has been exhibited many times, as is recorded in the Old Testament and the New, in the working of so-called wonders. The murmurings of the doubting Israelites were silenced over and over again when their needs were supplied in the wilderness. When Moses smote the rock in Horeb with his rod, water came forth from it to meet the requirement of the moment. Elijah caused the waters of Jordan to divide, that he and Elisha might pass over to the other side. And in many other instances man’s dominion was proved.
In due time Christ Jesus, who is known as the Way-shower, came to the world to teach those who would listen and learn how to use man’s God-given dominion. He did this and performed many marvelous works, called miracles. He performed these in direct opposition to material law and human belief, but in conformity to divine law, of which he had a perfect understanding. Thus he proved the availability and demonstrability of spiritual law in illustration of what he taught. Besides healing all manner of sickness and sin and raising the dead, he stilled the winds and calmed the waves. He demonstrated divine protection when he escaped from the midst of his pursuers. The law of gravity was reversed when he walked upon the water. The beliefs of time and space were put to naught when after entering a ship he was immediately on the other side of the lake. Provision of that which was lacking to complete the wedding feast was made manifest when he turned the water into wine. And in Capernaum, when they who collected the tribute money came, he told Simon Peter, who was with him, that he would find the money in a fish’s mouth.
Now these things were not done merely to be accommodating or, primarily, to meet human emergencies, but to show that spiritual law, when correctly and understanding applied, will operate in any human circumstance. Because of its divine nature it reverses, annuls, overrules, destroys every human belief regarding physical or material law. As one grows into a better understanding of these facts, through proof and demonstration, he comes naturally into a clearer realization of man’s rights as the child of God— nay, of his duty to avail himself under all circumstances of man’s God-given dominion over every belief in matter or evil.
At one time when Jesus healed a certain man who was blind from his birth, his disciples asked him saying, “Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus replied: “Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” At that time Jesus foresaw not only his betrayal and crucifixion, but also the long dark night of materialism that would follow his ascension, when the light of Truth, which his coming had kindled, would appear to flicker and fail, and spiritual darkness would settle upon the world. But he did not leave the disciples unconsoled; he prophesied and promised a new dawning of the Christ, Truth, designated by him the “Comforter,” or “Holy Ghost,” which the Father would send in his name to teach all things and bring all things to remembrance that he had taught and demonstrated.
Over eighteen centuries passed before this promise was fulfilled in Christian Science and the prophecy came true. In the year 1866, Mary Baker Eddy discovered the law of Spirit, which heals and saves by the same metaphysical process which Jesus taught and demonstrated; and she gave her discovery the name “Christian Science.” As we come to realize through our study of this divine Science that one’s sole duty on earth is to express God, good, life assumes a new aspect and living becomes worth while. Jesus was forever about his Father’s business. Thus, through rebuking and destroying every form of error which presents itself to us are we following in his footsteps and demonstrating man’s God-given dominion.
On page 10 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says, “Christian Science reveals a necessity for overcoming the world, the flesh, and evil, and thus destroying all error.” Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” When we realize that the law of God, divine Principle, is the only law, and that the spiritual universe and man are governed by and in accordance with this supreme law, we begin to understand what it means to “know the truth,” and from what we are to be freed. When we have progressed in our understanding of multiplication far enough to see that ten times a million is just as easily handled by mathematical law as is ten times ten, we accept the fact and think little of it beyond the necessity for making the calculation when the problem calls for it; but that the divine Principle which upholds the universe can operate in our human affairs may seem unreasonable and impossible, and almost too much to expect. Only as we relinquish our reliance upon mortal mind and human belief, and let that Mind which was in Christ Jesus be also in us, will our little craft of human affairs be safely piloted through the troubled waters of experience.
To “know the truth” is a mental process. By knowing the truth, Jesus was able instantly to multiply a few loaves and fishes to a number sufficient to feed several thousands. The law which unfolds the petals of myriad blossoms and clothes in royal loveliness each bird and butterfly, will surely tint our lives with heavenly hues and unfold with each day’s dawning God’s holy purpose, when we put all our trust in Him. Then shall we “know the truth,” which is the understanding of man’s dominion over the world, the flesh— all error.
