“Vigiem e orem, para que vocês não entrem "em tentação.”
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.”
1 Ó SENHOR, nosso Senhor, quão excelente é Teu nome em toda a terra! Que estabeleceste a Tua glória sobre os céus.
3 Quando considero os teus céus, o trabalho dos teus dedos, a lua e as estrelas que tu ordenastes;
4 O que é o homem, para que sejas cuidadoso com ele? E o filho do homem, para que o visites?
5 Porque o fizestes um pouco menos do que os anjos, e o coroaste com glória e honra.
6 Tu fizestes com que ele tivesse domínio sobre as obras de Tuas mãos; e Tu pusestes todas as coisas debaixo de seus pés:
1. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
3. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet.
SERMÃO DA LIÇÃO
2 Meus irmãos, considerem tudo isso como alegria quando caírem em diversas tentações;
3 Sabendo que, na prova da vossa fé opera a paciência.
4 Que a paciência, no entanto, realize a sua obra perfeita, para que sejais perfeitos e completos, sem vos faltar coisa alguma.
8 O homem indeciso é instável em todos os seus caminhos.
12 Abençoado é o homem que resiste à tentação; porque, tendo sido posto à prova, receberá a coroa da vida que o Senhor prometeu aos que o amam.
13 Que homem algum, ao ser tentado, diga: Por Deus sou tentado; porque Deus não pode ser tentado pelo mal, e a nenhum homem tenta.
14 Mas cada homem é tentado, quando atraído e seduzido pela sua própria cobiça.
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
13 Não vos tem sobrevindo tentação que não seja comum aos homens; mas Deus é fiel, o qual não permitirá que sejais tentados acima do que sois capazes; mas também com a tentação fará um caminho para escapar, para que sejais capazes de suportá-la.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
1 E José foi conduzido ao Egito, e Potifar, um oficial de Faraó, capitão da guarda, um egípcio, comprou-o das mãos dos ismaelitas, que o haviam levado para lá.
2 E o SENHOR estava com José, e ele era um homem próspero; e ele estava na casa de seu senhor, o egípcio.
3 E seu senhor viu que o SENHOR estava com ele, e que o SENHOR fazia tudo prosperar na sua mão.
4 E José encontrou graça aos olhos dele, e ele o serviu. E ele o fez supervisor da sua casa, e tudo o que ele possuía colocou na mão dele.
5 E aconteceu que, desde o tempo em que ele o fizera supervisor sobre sua casa, e sobre tudo que possuía, o SENHOR abençoou a casa do egípcio por causa de José. E a bênção do SENHOR estava sobre tudo o que ele possuía na casa, e no campo.
6 E ele deixou tudo que possuía nas mãos de José, e ele não sabia o que possuía, a não ser o pão que comia. E José era uma boa pessoa e formoso à vista.
7 E aconteceu que, depois destas coisas, a esposa de seu senhor lançou seus olhos sobre José; e ela disse: Deita-te comigo.
8 Mas ele se recusou, e disse à esposa de seu senhor: Eis que meu senhor não sabe do que está comigo na casa, e ele confiou tudo o que tem nas minhas mãos;
9 Não há ninguém maior na casa do que eu. Tampouco me negou coisa alguma senão a ti, pois és mulher dele. Como, então, eu poderia fazer tamanho mal e pecar contra Deus?
10 E aconteceu que, enquanto ela falava com José dia após dia, e ele não lhe dando ouvidos para deitar-se com ela e nem estar com ela.
11 E aconteceu que, certo tempo, José entrou na casa para fazer seu serviço, e não havia ninguém dos homens da casa ali dentro.
12 E ela o apanhou pela sua veste, dizendo: Deita-te comigo. E ele deixou sua veste na mão dela, fugiu e foi embora.
1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
18 Sabemos que todo aquele que é nascido de Deus não peca; mas o que é gerado por Deus guarda-se a si mesmo, e o maligno não lhe toca.
19 E nós sabemos que somos de Deus, e que todo o mundo jaz no maligno.
20 E sabemos que o Filho de Deus veio, e nos deu um entendimento, que podemos conhecer aquele que é verdadeiro; e nós estamos naquele que é verdadeiro, ou seja, em seu Filho Jesus Cristo. Este é o verdadeiro Deus, e a vida eterna.
21 Filhinhos, guardai-vos dos ídolos. Amém.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
16 E Jesus, quando foi batizado, saiu logo da água, e eis que se lhe abriram os céus, e viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como pomba e vindo sobre ele.
17 E eis que uma voz do céu dizia: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem Eu me comprazo.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
1 Então Jesus foi conduzido pelo Espírito ao deserto, para ser tentado pelo diabo.
2 E quando ele jejuou quarenta dias e quarenta noites, ele teve fome.
3 E quando veio a ele o tentador, disse: Se tu és o Filho de Deus, ordena que estas pedras sejam feitas pães.
4 Mas ele respondendo, disse: Está escrito: Nem só de pão viverá o homem, mas de toda a palavra que procede da boca de Deus.
5 Então o diabo o levou à cidade santa, e o colocou sobre o pináculo do templo;
6 E lhe disse: Se tu és o Filho de Deus, lança-te daqui abaixo; porque está escrito: Ele dará ordens aos Seus anjos a teu respeito, e em suas mãos te sustentarão, para que nunca tropeces com o teu pé em pedra alguma.
7 Então disse-lhe Jesus: Também está escrito: Não tentarás o Senhor teu Deus.
8 Novamente, o diabo o levou a um monte altíssimo, e lhe mostrou todos os reinos do mundo e a sua glória.
9 E lhe disse: Todas estas coisas eu te darei, se prostrado, me adorares.
10 Então disse-lhe Jesus: Vai-te, Satanás, porque está escrito: Tu adorarás ao Senhor teu Deus, e só a ele servirás.
11 Então o diabo o deixou; e eis que chegaram anjos e o serviam.
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
1 E vendo as multidões, ele subiu a um monte; e quando ele estava sentado, aproximaram-se dele os seus discípulos.
2 E ele abrindo a sua boca, ensinava-os, dizendo:
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
9 Orai, pois, da seguinte maneira:
13 E não nos conduzas à tentação, mas livra-nos do mal; porque Teu é o reino, e o poder, e a glória, para sempre. Amém.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye:
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
O homem é a expressão do ser de Deus.
Man is the expression of God's being.
O homem é incapaz de pecar, de adoecer ou morrer. O homem real não pode afastar-se da santidade, nem pode Deus, por quem o homem evoluiu, engendrar a capacidade ou liberdade para pecar.
The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin.
A história do Cristianismo fornece provas sublimes da influência de apoio e do poder protetor concedido ao homem por seu Pai celestial, a onipotente Mente, que dá ao homem fé e compreensão por meio das quais se defender, não apenas da tentação, mas de ataques corporais sofridos.
The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering.
O poder moral e espiritual pertence ao Espírito, que mantém o “vento em seus punhos”; e este ensinamento está de acordo com a Ciência e a harmonia. Na Ciência, você não pode ter nenhum poder oposto a Deus, e os sentidos físicos devem abandonar seu falso testemunho. Sua influência para o bem depende do peso que você coloca na balança certa. O bem que você faz e incorpora lhe dá o único poder que pode ser obtido. O mal não é poder. É uma zombaria da força, que logo trai sua fraqueza e cai, para nunca mais se levantar.
Caminhemos nos passos da Verdade e do Amor, seguindo o exemplo do nosso Mestre na compreensão da metafísica divina. O Cristianismo é a base da verdadeira cura . Tudo o que mantém o pensamento humano alinhado com o amor altruísta recebe diretamente o poder divino.
Moral and spiritual might belong to Spirit, who holds the "wind in His fists;" and this teaching accords with Science and harmony. In Science, you can have no power opposed to God, and the physical senses must give up their false testimony. Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw into the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable. Evil is not power. It is a mockery of strength, which erelong betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise.
We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics. Christianity is the basis of true healing. Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power.
A descrição do homem como puramente físico, ou como material e espiritual - mas em ambos os casos dependente de sua organização física - é a caixa de Pandora, da qual surgiram todos os males, especialmente o desespero.
A matéria, que toma o poder divino em suas próprias mãos e afirma ser um criador, é uma ficção, na qual o paganismo e a luxúria são tão sancionados pela sociedade que a humanidade pegou seu contágio moral.

The description of man as purely physical, or as both material and spiritual, — but in either case dependent upon his physical organization, — is the Pandora box, from which all ills have gone forth, especially despair. Matter, which takes divine power into its own hands and claims to be a creator, is a fiction, in which paganism and lust are so sanctioned by society that mankind has caught their moral contagion.
Through discernment of the spiritual opposite of materiality, even the way through Christ, Truth, man will reopen with the key of divine Science the gates of Paradise which human beliefs have closed, and will find himself unfallen, upright, pure, and free,
A ideia de que naturezas animais podem, porventura, conferir força ao caráter é absurda demais para ser considerada, quando lembramos que, mediante a ascendência espiritual, nosso Senhor e Mestre curou os enfermos, ressuscitou os mortos e ordenou até mesmo que os ventos e as ondas Lhe obedecessem. A Graça e a Verdade são poderosas acima de todos os outros meios e métodos.
The notion that animal natures can possibly give force to character is too absurd for consideration, when we remember that through spiritual ascendency our Lord and Master healed the sick, raised the dead, and commanded even the winds and waves to obey him. Grace and Truth are potent beyond all other means and methods.
O pecado e a doença precisam ser concebidos no pensamento antes de poderem se manifestar. É preciso controlar os maus pensamentos de imediato; caso contrário, eles acabarão por controlar você. Jesus declarou que olhar com desejo para objetos proibidos constituía uma violação de um preceito moral. Ele enfatizou fortemente a ação da mente humana, invisível aos sentidos.
Os maus pensamentos e intenções não vão além nem causam mais danos do que a crença que o indivíduo permitir. Maus pensamentos, desejos lascivos e propósitos maliciosos não podem propagar-se — como pólen ao sabor do vento — de uma mente humana para outra e encontrar abrigo insuspeitado, se a virtude e a Verdade edificarem uma defesa sólida.
Sin and disease must be thought before they can be manifested. You must control evil thoughts in the first instance, or they will control you in the second. Jesus declared that to look with desire on forbidden objects was to break a moral precept. He laid great stress on the action of the human mind, unseen to the senses.
Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one's belief permits. Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.
A infidelidade à aliança matrimonial é o flagelo social de todas as raças, "a peste que se propaga nas trevas, . . . a destruição que assola ao meio-dia".
O mandamento "Não cometerás adultério" não é menos imperativo do que aquele: "Não matarás".
A castidade é o cimento da civilização e do progresso. Sem ela, não há estabilidade na sociedade e, sem ela, não se pode alcançar a Ciência da Vida.
Infidelity to the marriage covenant is the social scourge of all races, "the pestilence that walketh in darkness, ... the destruction that wasteth at noonday." The commandment, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," is no less imperative than the one, "Thou shalt not kill."
Chastity is the cement of civilization and progress. Without it there is no stability in society, and without it one cannot attain the Science of Life.
A escravidão do homem aos senhores mais implacáveis — a paixão, o egoísmo, a inveja, o ódio e a vingança — só é vencida mediante uma luta árdua. Cada hora de demora torna a luta mais severa.
Se o homem não triunfa sobre as paixões, elas destroem a felicidade, a saúde e a dignidade humana. Aqui, a Ciência Cristã é a panaceia soberana, conferindo força à fraqueza da mente mortal — força proveniente da Mente imortal e omnipotente — e elevando a humanidade acima de si mesma a desejos mais puros, até mesmo ao poder espiritual e à boa vontade para com o próximo.
Man's enslavement to the most relentless masters — passion, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge — is conquered only by a mighty struggle. Every hour of delay makes the struggle more severe. If man is not victorious over the passions, they crush out happiness, health, and manhood. Here Christian Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the weakness of mortal mind, — strength from the immortal and omnipotent Mind, — and lifting humanity above itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and good-will to man.
A reforma da temperança, sentida em toda a nossa terra, resulta da cura metafísica, que corta toda árvore que não produz bons frutos. Essa convicção de que não há prazer real no pecado é um dos pontos mais importantes na teologia da Ciência Cristã. Despertar o pecador para essa visão nova e verdadeira do pecado, mostrar-lhe que o pecado não proporciona prazer, e esse conhecimento fortalece sua coragem moral e aumenta sua capacidade de dominar o mal e amar o bem.
Curar o doente e reformar o pecador são uma e a mesma coisa na Ciência Cristã. Ambas as curas requerem o mesmo método e são inseparáveis da Verdade.
The temperance reform, felt all over our land, results from metaphysical healing, which cuts down every tree that brings not forth good fruit. This conviction, that there is no real pleasure in sin, is one of the most important points in the theology of Christian Science. Arouse the sinner to this new and true view of sin, show him that sin confers no pleasure, and this knowledge strengthens his moral courage and increases his ability to master evil and to love good.
Healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing in Christian Science. Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth.
A coragem moral é necessária para enfrentar o erro e proclamar o que é certo. Mas como reformaremos o homem que possui mais coragem animal do que moral, e que não tem a verdadeira noção do bem?
Por meio da consciência humana, convença o mortal de seu erro ao buscar meios materiais para obter a felicidade. A razão é a faculdade humana mais ativa. Que ela oriente os sentimentos e desperte no homem o senso adormecido de obrigação moral; assim, gradualmente, ele aprenderá a nulidade dos prazeres do sentido humano e a grandeza e a bem-aventurança de um sentido espiritual, que silencia o material ou corpóreo. Então, ele não apenas será salvo, mas já está salvo.
Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong and to proclaim the right. But how shall we reform the man who has more animal than moral courage, and who has not the true idea of good? Through human consciousness, convince the mortal of his mistake in seeking material means for gaining happiness. Reason is the most active human faculty. Let that inform the sentiments and awaken the man's dormant sense of moral obligation, and by degrees he will learn the nothingness of the pleasures of human sense and the grandeur and bliss of a spiritual sense, which silences the material or corporeal. Then he not only will be saved, but is saved.
Quando a ilusão de doença ou pecado o tentar, apegue-se firmemente a Deus e à Sua ideia. Não permita que nada além da Sua semelhança permaneça em seu pensamento. Não deixe que o medo ou a dúvida obscureçam sua percepção clara e sua confiança serena de que o reconhecimento da vida harmoniosa — como a Vida é eternamente — pode destruir qualquer sensação dolorosa ou crença naquilo que a Vida não é.
When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not.
A humanidade progredirá por meio da Ciência e do Cristianismo. A necessidade de elevar a raça dá origem ao fato de que a Mente pode fazê-lo; pois a Mente pode conferir pureza em vez de impureza, força em vez de fraqueza e saúde em vez de doença. A Verdade é um agente transformador em todo o sistema e pode torná-lo "inteiramente são".
Mankind will improve through Science and Christianity. The necessity for uplifting the race is father to the fact that Mind can do it; for Mind can impart purity instead of impurity, strength instead of weakness, and health instead of disease. Truth is an alterative in the entire system, and can make it "every whit whole."
E não nos deixes cair em tentação, mas livra-nos do mal; E Deus não nos deixa cair em tentação, mas nos livra do pecado, da doença e da morte. Pois Teu é o reino, o poder e a glória, para sempre.
Pois Deus é infinito, todo-poder, toda Vida, Verdade, Amor, sobre o Todo, e emTudo.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All.
Será dever de cada membro desta Igreja orar todos os dias: "Venha o Teu reino"; que o reinado da Verdade, da Vida e do Amor divinos se estabeleça em mim e expulse de mim todo pecado; e que a Tua Palavra enriqueça os afetos de toda a humanidade e os governe! — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 4
Nem a animosidade nem o mero apego pessoal devem impelir os motivos ou atos dos membros da Igreja Mãe. Na Ciência, somente o Amor divino governa o homem; e um Cientista Cristão reflete as doces comodidades do Amor, repreendendo o pecado, na verdadeira fraternidade, caridade e perdão. Os membros desta Igreja devem vigiar e orar diariamente para serem libertos de todo mal, de profetizar, julgar, condenar, aconselhar, influenciar ou serem influenciados erroneamente. — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 1
Será dever de cada membro desta Igreja defender-se diariamente contra a sugestão mental agressiva, e não ser levado a esquecer ou negligenciar seu dever para com Deus, seu líder e a humanidade. Por suas obras, ele será julgado — e justificado ou condenado. — Manual da Igreja, Artigo VIII, Seção 6.
