Deus, o Único Legislador

É evidente por si só que o verdadeiro governo e a verdadeira lei provêm de uma causa inteligente. Visto que Deus é a única causa inteligente, o verdadeiro governo e a verdadeira lei devem emanar d’Ele. Em outras palavras, como Deus é o Criador de tudo o que é real, somente Ele é o Criador de toda lei verdadeira. A revelação da Ciência Cristã confirma isso. Em “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras”, Mary Baker Eddy, a Descobridora e Fundadora da Ciência Cristã, refere-se, na página 435, a Deus como “o único legislador do homem”; e, na página 381, ela escreve: “Deus é o legislador”.

A Ciência do Cristianismo, demonstrada por Cristo Jesus e explicada na Ciência Cristã, revela que Deus é a Mente imortal e universal, o Ser plenamente inteligente. A criação real, incluindo o homem real, consiste nas ideias infinitas dessa Mente. O oposto negativo de Deus é um sentido falso de Mente, denominado mente mortal, que alega expressar-se por meio de múltiplas formas de pensamento mortal. A mente mortal reivindica tudo o que pertence a Deus: alega ser legisladora e impor suas leis por intermédio dos mortais, afetando, com essas leis, a vida, a saúde e a felicidade da humanidade. Ela procura substituir o espiritual e o real pelo seu sentido mortal e material de Mente e de criação — inclusive do homem —, tal como um sonho parece substituir o ambiente habitual de quem sonha.

A Ciência Cristã aceita como realidade Deus, a Mente divina, e a criação da Mente, incluindo o homem. Rejeita como negativo e falso tudo o que a Mente divina não conhece, inclusive a pretensão da mente mortal de existir, de ser legisladora e de possuir agentes pelos quais opera ou pode operar. O oposto negativo de Deus e de Seu governo parece verdadeiro apenas para o sentido material iludido, que aceita uma mente (assim chamada) que não é Deus, renunciando, assim, ao Primeiro Mandamento: “Não terás outros deuses diante de mim”.

Sendo Deus Mente, ou Espírito, Suas leis são as leis da Mente, ou do Espírito. Elas governam, com Sua própria natureza absoluta, cada ideia em Sua criação espiritual — a única criação verdadeira. Suas leis operam sem cessar nem interrupção, na verdadeira consciência. De fato, a individualidade do homem real é constituída e sustentada pela lei divina, conforme a Sra. Eddy declara na página 11 de *No and Yes* [Não e Sim], na esclarecedora afirmação:

“O homem tem individualidade perpétua; e as leis de Deus, bem como sua ação inteligente e harmoniosa, constituem sua individualidade na Ciência da Alma”. A lei divina é a própria essência do verdadeiro governo. As leis de Deus, então, operam constantemente na verdadeira individualidade, perpetuando a vida, a saúde, a compreensão, o amor e a imunidade contra a crença no mal. A lei divina da universalidade não deixa lugar para o erro, nem mente alguma através da qual o chamado mal possa agir.

O sentido mortal — representante da mente mortal — resiste às proibições da lei espiritual e clama por liberdade para satisfazer todo desejo material, sem outra razão senão a de querer o que quer simplesmente por querer; expondo, assim, a indiferença e a oposição da mentalidade mortal a Deus, o único verdadeiro Legislador.

O reconhecimento crescente das leis de Deus — Espírito, Mente — tem revelado o caráter fundamentalmente errôneo das bebidas alcoólicas, assim como revelou a natureza intrinsecamente errada da guerra. A guerra tem sido perpetuada pelo egoísmo, pelo medo e pelo orgulho — falsos conceitos da mente mortal. O consumo de bebidas alcoólicas tem sido perpetuado pelos anseios carnais da materialidade. O desejo pelo álcool é uma forma de magnetismo animal empregada pela mente mortal para manter os homens escravizados no inferno da materialidade. É um obstáculo ao crescimento espiritual, pois estimula o sentido material de identidade que, segundo o Mestre, “de nada aproveita”. Visto que sua influência é totalmente negativa, ela deve desaparecer diante da iluminação espiritual. “Toda planta que meu Pai celestial não plantou será arrancada”, disse Aquele que mais compreendia a lei de Deus do que qualquer outro na história da humanidade.

A mente mortal reivindica as proporções da Mente imortal; reivindica sua universalidade e seu poder. Mas reivindicar não é possuir. Um milhão ou quarenta milhões de mortais pensando em oposição à lei do Espírito não são mais capazes de instituir uma lei do que um único mortal insano. As manifestações multiplicadas da mente mortal, expressas por meio de pessoas, grupos e organizações, não são mais reais ou substanciais do que o mal em sua forma mais simples. Some zeros, multiplique zeros, e o resultado será sempre zero. A consciência material, sendo negativa em sua origem, não adquire poder algum ao afirmar suas alegações destituídas de inteligência e suas conclusões desprovidas de Deus. A única maneira de os homens pensarem corretamente é pensar conforme Deus lhes concede pensar, e saber apenas o que Deus lhes concede saber. A consciência que Deus confere a cada indivíduo inclui apenas o conceito verdadeiro de Deus, da lei de Deus, de si mesmo e de seu próximo.

Nenhuma suposta mente mortal, nem as suas sugestões hipnóticas, pode impedir que a ideia de Deus — o homem — tenha uma constante consciência da lei espiritual, a qual recusa reconhecimento aos apetites da carne. Nenhum dos filhos de Deus pode tornar-se agente ou vítima do erro e de seus argumentos enganosos.

O erro não possui Inteligência para defender sua causa; não tem como acessar a consciência real, seja individual ou universal, nem como apelar ao pensamento verdadeiro. A influência pessoal, o medo e o desejo de poder nada podem contra o único Legislador, Deus, que a todos ama e a todos inspira. Na realidade, não há afastamento d’Ele nem de Sua lei.

Deus é Tudo-em-tudo.

Nenhuma manifestação individualizada do mal pode erguer-se com êxito contra o governo e a lei do Espírito, que eternamente proíbem tudo o que se opõe ao reino da Mente divina. A Sra. Eddy diz: “A Verdade, a Vida e o Amor são uma lei de aniquilação para tudo o que não lhes seja semelhante, pois nada declaram a não ser Deus” Ciência e Saúde*, p. 243. O reino de Deus, constituído por uma lei espiritual de inteligência infinita, manifesta-se em toda parte e continuamente por meio da atividade consciente de Suas ideias. Com absoluta certeza, Cristo Jesus afirmou: “O reino de Deus está próximo”. Disso decorre que o reino da lei de Deus também deve estar próximo. Jesus sabia e provava isso, apesar do clamor da mentira universal do erro. Nós também podemos fazê-lo.

Em meio às correntes do pensamento mortal, precisamos frequentemente lembrar-nos de que Deus é o Legislador— e não a mente mortal ou o sentido mortal —, e de que Suas leis estão estabelecidas. Os homens descobrem e demonstram as leis de Deus, mas jamais podem revisá-las ou modificá-las. À medida que compreendemos a supremacia universal de Deus, que vemos que Ele é a única fonte da lei verdadeira e que todas as Suas ideias concordam com Sua lei e a ela respondem — expressando e proclamando Sua lei do bem em pensamento, palavra e vida —, à medida que percebemos, em certa medida, esses fatos espirituais, nosso pensamento atua no sentido de restringir a mente mortal e promover o reconhecimento da verdadeira lei entre os homens.

Em uma declaração breve, porém importante, publicada no *Boston Post* em 1908 — e reimpressa na página 276 de The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany —, nossa Líder aponta a obrigação que sentia de contribuir para o apoio a “um governo justo”. Um governo justo manifesta-se na medida em que aqueles que compartilham as obrigações e os benefícios do governo humano reconhecem a presença da lei verdadeira — a lei do Espírito — atuando em todo ser consciente e governando-o, inclusive a verdadeira individualidade do homem.

God the Only Lawmaker

It is self-evident that true government and true law proceed from an intelligent cause. Since God is the one and only intelligent cause, true government and true law must be of Him. In other words, since God is the Maker of all that is real, He alone is the Maker of all true law. The revelation of Christian Science affirms this. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, refers on page 435 to God as “man’s only lawgiver;” and on page 381 she writes, “God is the lawmaker.”

The Science of Christianity, demonstrated by Christ Jesus and explained in Christian Science, reveals God to be immortal and universal Mind, the all-intelligent One. The real creation, including the real man, consists of the infinite ideas of this Mind. The negative opposite of God is a false sense of Mind, termed mortal mind, which claims to express itself through manifold modes of mortal thinking. Mortal mind claims all that belongs to God: it claims to be a lawmaker and to assert its laws through mortals, and by these laws to affect the life, health, and happiness of mankind. Its mortal and material sense of Mind and of creation, including man, it would substitute for the spiritual and real, even as a dream seems to substitute itself for the ordinary environment of a dreamer.

Christian Science accepts as reality God, divine Mind, and Mind’s creation, including man. It repudiates as negative and untrue all that divine Mind does not know, including the claim of mortal mind to exist, to be a lawmaker, and to have agencies through which it operates, or may operate. The negative opposite of God and His government seems true only to deluded material sense, which accepts another mind (so called) than God, so renouncing the First Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

God being Mind, or Spirit, His laws are the laws of Mind, or Spirit. They govern with His own absoluteness every idea in His spiritual creation, the only true creation. His laws operate without cessation or interruption, in true consciousness. Indeed, the real man’s individuality is constituted and sustained by divine law, as Mrs. Eddy declares on page 11 of “No and Yes” in the enlightening statement, “Man has perpetual individuality; and God’s laws, and their intelligent and harmonious action, constitute his individuality in the Science of Soul.” Divine law is the very essence of true government. God’s laws, then, operate constantly in true individuality, perpetuating life, health, understanding, love, immunity from evil belief. God’s law of universality leaves no place for error, and no mind through which so-called evil can act.

Mortal sense, mortal mind’s representative, resists the prohibitions of spiritual law, clamors for license to indulge in every material desire; for no better reason than that it wants what it wants because it wants it, thus exposing the indifference and opposition of mortal mentality to God, the only true lawmaker.

The growing recognition of the laws of God, Spirit, Mind, has been uncovering the fundamental wrongness of alcoholic liquor, as it has the inherent wrongness of war. War has been perpetuated through selfishness, fear, and pride, the false concepts of mortal mind. The use of alcoholic liquor has been perpetuated by the fleshly cravings of materiality. The craving for alcohol is a form of animal magnetism employed by mortal mind to hold men enslaved in the hell of materiality. It is a deterrent to spiritual growth, stimulating the material sense of self which the Master said “profiteth nothing.” Because its influence is wholly negative it must disappear before spiritual enlightenment. “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up,” said he who knew more of God’s law than any other in human history.

Mortal mind claims the proportions of immortal Mind, claims its universality and power. But to claim is not to have. One million or forty millions of mortals thinking contrary to Spirit’s law are no more capable of enacting law than is one insane mortal. The multiplied manifestations of mortal mind expressed through persons, groups, and organizations are no more actual and substantial than is evil in its simplest mode. Add zeros, multiply zeros, and the result is always zero. Material consciousness, being negative in its inception, acquires no power as it asserts its mindless claims and Godless conclusions. The one way for men to think correctly is to think as God gives them to think, to know only what God gives them to know. The God-given consciousness of each individual includes only the true concept of God, of God’s law, of himself, and of his brother.

No suppositional mortal mind or its hypnotic suggestions can prevent God’s idea, man, from being constantly cognizant of spiritual law, which refuses recognition to the appetites of the flesh. Not one of God’s children can become the agent or the victim of error and its lying arguments. Error has no intelligence with which to plead its case; it has no way of approach to real individual or universal consciousness, no appeal to true thought. Personal influence, fear, desire for power, avail not against the only lawmaker, God, who loves all and inspires all. There is no falling away in reality from Him and His law. God is All-in-all.

No individualized manifestation of evil can array itself successfully against the government and the law of Spirit which eternally prohibits all that opposes the reign of divine Mind. Mrs. Eddy says, “Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God” Science and Health, p. 243. God’s reign of all-intelligent spiritual law is everywhere and continually expressed through the conscious activity of His ideas. With absolute assurance Christ Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is at hand.” It follows that the reign of God’s law must be at hand. Jesus knew and proved this despite the clamor of error’s universal lie. So can we.

In the midst of the currents of mortal thinking we need often to remind ourselves that God, not mortal mind or mortal sense, is the lawmaker, and that His laws are established. Men discover and demonstrate God’s laws, but they can never revise or modify them. As we realize the universal supremacy of God, see that He alone is the source of real law, see that all of His ideas are concurring in and responsive to His law, voicing and expressing His law of good in thought, word, and life—as we realize in some degree these spiritual facts, our thinking operates to bind mortal mind and further the recognition of true law among men.

In a brief but important statement appearing in the Boston Post in 1908, and reprinted on page 276 of “The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany” our Leader indicates the obligation she felt to aid in supporting “a righteous government.” Righteous government appears in the degree that those who share the obligation and benefits of human government realize the presence of true law, the law of Spirit, operating in and governing all conscious being, including the true individuality of man.
