A Lei Da Bondade

A obediência à lei da bondade é o único baluarte do cristão. A piedade e a bondade fraternal caminham juntas, visto que não há piedade que não seja bondosa, nem bondade que não seja divina. “Aquele que não ama não conhece a Deus; porque Deus é Amor.” Se há algo de que o mundo necessita hoje, é a atuação científica da lei da bondade. Onde quer que ela se torne ativa na consciência individual, eis que surge um homem ou uma mulher melhores. A humanidade depende absolutamente dela para sua salvação das investidas do pecado e da doença. Por que isso acontece? Porque é a lei de Deus, a lei por meio da qual Ele se dá a conhecer aos Seus filhos. Vemos, por toda parte, resultados lamentáveis ​​decorrentes da tentativa de enxergar a Deus — o Bem — através das lentes do egoísmo, da frieza, da indiferença, da malícia, da inveja e do ódio. Não é de estranhar que uma concepção humanizada da Divindade substitua a verdadeira ideia de Deus na mente daqueles que nutrem tais qualidades desprovidas de amor. Somente mediante a subjugação desses erros e de outros semelhantes é que a lei de Deus passa a atuar de fato no coração dos homens.

A Ciência Cristã está aqui para ensinar à humanidade, tanto por preceito quanto por exemplo, como compreender que Deus é Amor e que o Amor se expressa apenas por meio da lei da bondade. Ela define a natureza do Amor e explica, de maneira totalmente prática, o modo como ele atua. Simplesmente acreditar em um Deus de Amor, sem compreender ou praticar a lei ou regra pela qual o Amor atua, é ter uma compreensão equivocada da natureza do Infinito. Milhares e milhares das melhores pessoas do mundo professam conhecer a Deus e chegam até a afirmar que Ele é onipotente e onipresente; contudo, no momento em que a Ciência Cristã entra em cena e demonstra a atuação prática da lei do Amor na cura de doenças, elas dizem não acreditar nisso.

É a atuação de qualquer lei que nos coloca em contato com o seu princípio. A cura resultante da compreensão da Ciência Cristã é simplesmente a operação de uma lei; o estudante da Ciência Cristã sabe, com absoluta certeza, que essa lei é a lei da bondade e que o Amor é o seu Princípio. Assim como todos os outros cristãos, ele dispõe de abundantes evidências bíblicas que o encorajam a crer que o grande Mestre curava os enfermos mediante a operação dessa mesma lei; e quando, graças à sua compreensão da Ciência Cristã, ele aplica a regra da cura e os sinais da doença desaparecem, ele então compreende que a lei do Amor está sempre em ação e disponível — o que, para ele, torna-se a descoberta mais importante de sua vida. Isso significa que ele encontrou a Deus — o Pai infinito — e que Deus Se revelou por meio da lei da bondade, a lei do Amor. Ele agora tem a prova cabal de que Deus não envia doenças nem sofrimento, mas que a obediência à Sua lei elimina qualquer vestígio deles; de que Deus é um Deus de paz, e não de confusão; de que Ele não está no redemoinho nem em nenhuma das forças mortíferas da mente humana mortal; de que Ele não está irado com Seus filhos, infligindo-lhes todo tipo de tormento — uma teoria que, outrora, era amplamente aceita.

Se não fosse por mais nada, o mundo deveria à Sra. Eddy uma profunda gratidão pela prova prática e convincente desta premissa fundamental: o Amor divino não pune nada além do pecado. (Veja *Ciência e Saúde*, p. 412.) A compreensão da lei da bondade tornou isso possível nos dias de hoje, e o mundo já está despertando do seu terrível medo e pavor de ficar face a face com Deus. Está aprendendo a vencer o ódio, a inveja, a malícia e muitos outros pensamentos afins que obscureceriam e impediriam a chegada do Cristo à consciência humana. Está começando a perceber que o Cristo não se manifesta àquele que odeia o seu próximo e que não lhe concede os mesmos direitos e privilégios que reivindica para si mesmo. Está começando a entrar em contato com a lei da bondade, a qual capacita o pensamento humano a buscar, com esperança e alegria, a compreensão do Amor divino e a obedecer às suas exigências.

O primeiro vislumbre de Deus como Amor infinito, que “não pensa o mal”, exerce uma influência sanadora que transcende qualquer descrição. Por que o mundo cristão não despertou para esse verdadeiro conceito de Deus? Por que incontáveis milhares se apegam à crença em um Deus semelhante ao homem? Porque aceitaram o testemunho dos sentidos físicos e “adoraram e serviram à criatura em vez do Criador”. Declararam que é perfeitamente natural para o homem expressar malícia, inveja e ódio; perfeitamente natural e até legítimo manifestar o exato oposto do Amor divino. Seguiu-se, então, outra admissão extremamente perigosa e desastrosa: a de que, visto que o ódio humano é natural e legítimo, ele deve, naturalmente, emanar de Deus. Esse raciocínio material não científico resultou apenas em confundir o pensamento humano e afastá-lo da verdadeira ideia de Deus como Amor. Praticamente o dissociou de qualquer conceito adequado da lei da bondade, deixando-o livre para buscar a manifestação de Deus em inúmeras leis ditas materiais — as quais a Ciência prova não serem leis de forma alguma, mas simplesmente conceitos errôneos dos mortais.

Somente por meio da atividade da lei da bondade a humanidade poderá compreender corretamente o castigo e o perdão do pecado. Enquanto se acreditar na malícia e no ódio e se ceder a eles, a influência disciplinadora do Amor divino não poderá ser compreendida na prática, e a humanidade continuará tentando vencer um erro com outro, substituindo os artifícios humanos pela correção divina.

Se todos os instrutores religiosos pudessem compreender o significado prático do perdão de Deus para o pecado, abandonariam com alegria seus esforços de levar as pessoas ao reino dos céus pelo medo e passariam a demonstrar, com satisfação, à humanidade sofredora e enferma pelo pecado, que o reino celestial reside na consciência de cada indivíduo; isso se daria mediante o recurso à lei da bondade, pela qual o Amor divino atua espiritualmente para destruir as evidências do pecado, da doença e da morte. No momento em que o indivíduo assimila a ideia correta do Amor divino — que “não quer que ninguem pereça”, mas que todos cheguem ao conhecimento da verdade —, ele começa a vivenciar um novo sentido de vida.

As coisas antigas passaram, e ele adota um padrão de pensamento novo e mais elevado. Muitos casos de cura resultaram da eliminação do medo e da noção distorcida de punição eterna que o paciente nutria. Somente por meio da lei da bondade é possível dissipar o sentimento de medo que aflige incontáveis pessoas na Terra e permitir que a doce ordem do Amor — “Paz, aquieta-te” — se instale na Consciência. O indivíduo que imagina que Deus sente ira e ódio pode até acreditar que é íntegro, honrado e justo; porém, sem a lei da bondade para conduzi-lo a Deus em busca de sabedoria, força e compreensão espirituais, a pretensão ilusória do egoísmo humano tende a manifestar-se de cem maneiras diferentes.

O lar não é o único lugar onde o amor e a bondade devem prevalecer. Eles são igualmente necessários no mundo dos negócios. Ao final de cada dia de trabalho, milhares de estabelecimentos comerciais registram a prevalência da desonestidade, da ganância e da injustiça, do egoísmo, da sensualidade e até mesmo da crueldade — tudo isso porque a lei da bondade não é compreendida. Enquanto essa lei não for entendida à luz da Ciência Cristã, a “desumanidade do homem para com o homem” continuará a permear, em maior ou menor grau, toda atividade humana. O poderoso conflito entre capital [sindicatos] e trabalho [empregador] só cessará quando essa lei se tornar praticamente ativa. A questão trabalhista só será solucionada quando empregador e empregado compreenderem a ideia plenamente satisfatória de Deus como Amor infinito, permitindo-lhes reconhecer a fraternidade universal da humanidade. Os diversos problemas sociais, civis e econômicos não encontrarão solução satisfatória a não ser por meio da lei da bondade — a única lei que revela e define a irrealidade e a natureza ilegal do egoísmo humano, conduzindo o pensamento a Deus, que é Amor. Lord Burleigh disse certa vez: “A bondade infunde a maior energia tanto no corpo quanto na alma, e cria aquele espírito de entrega ao bem comum que aniquila as considerações egoístas e une todas as classes pelos laços de uma fraternidade pacífica e santa”.

The Law Of Kindness

Obedience to the law of kindness is the Christian’s only stronghold. Godliness and brotherly kindness go hand in hand, since there is no godliness that is not kind and no kindness that is not Godlike. “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” If there is any one thing needed to-day in the world it is the scientific operation of the law of kindness. Wherever it becomes operative in individual consciousness, behold, a better man or woman. Humanity is absolutely dependent upon it for its salvation from the besetments of sin and disease. Why is this so? Because it is the law of God, the law through which He makes Himself known to His children. We witness on all sides sad results from trying to see God, good, through the lenses of selfishness, coldness, indifference, malice, envy, and hatred. It is not strange that a humanized sense of Deity should supplant the true idea of God in the minds of those who entertain such unlovable qualities. Only through the subjugation of these and kindred errors does the law of God become practically operative in the hearts of men.

Christian Science is here to instruct humanity, both by precept and example, how to understand that God is Love, and that Love is expressed only through the law of kindness. It defines the nature of Love and explains in a thoroughly practical manner the modus of its operation. Simply to believe in a God of Love, and not to understand or practise the law or rule by which Love operates, is to misunderstand the nature of the infinite. Thousands upon thousand of the world’s best people profess to know God, and even go so far as to say that He is omnipotent and omnipresent; but the moment Christian Science appears upon the scene and demonstrates the available activity of the law of Love in the healing of disease, they say they do not believe it.

It is the operation of any law that brings us in touch with its principle. The healing which results from an understanding of Christian Science is simply the operation of law, and the student of Christian Science knows positively that this law is the law of kindness, and that Love is its Principle. In common with all other Christians he has abundant Scriptural evidence to encourage him in believing that the great Master healed the sick through the operation of this same law, and when, through his understanding of Christian Science, he applies the rule of healing and the evidence of disease disappears, he then knows that the law of Love is ever-operative and available, and to him this becomes the most important discovery of his life. It means that he has found God.—the infinite Father,—and that God has made Himself known through the law of kindness, the law of Love. He now has proof positive that God does not send disease or suffering, but that obedience to His law will remove all trace of them; that God is a God of peace, not of confusion; that He is not in the whirlwind, not in any of the deathdealing forces of the mortal human mind; that He is not angry with His children, inflicting them with all manner of torments,—a theory which was once very generally believed.

If for no other one thing, the world owes Mrs. Eddy a deep sense of gratitude for her practical and convincing proof of this all-important proposition, that divine Love punishes nothing but sin. (See Science and Health, p. 412.) The understanding of the law of kindness has made this possible at the present hour, and already the world is awakening from its terrible fear and dread of coming face to face with God. It is learning to master hatred, envy, malice, and many other related thoughts that would obscure and obstruct to human consciousness the coming of the Christ. It is beginning to see that Christ has not come to the individual who hates his brother man, and who does not accord to him the same rights and privileges that he claims for himself. It is beginning to get in touch with the law of kindness, which enables human thought to reach out hopefully and joyfully for an understanding of divine Love, and to become obedient to its demands.

The very first glimpse of God as infinite Love, who “thinketh no evil,” has a healing influence beyond words to explain. Why has the Christian world not awakened to this true concept of God? Why is it that countless thousands are holding to the belief of a manlike God? Because they have accepted the testimony of the physical senses, and have “worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator.” They have declared that it is perfectly natural for man to express malice, envy, and hatred; perfectly natural and even lawful for him to manifest the very opposite of divine Love. Then has followed another most dangerous and disastrous admission,—that, because human hate is natural and lawful, it must of course emanate from God. This unscientific material reasoning has only resulted in confusing human thought and leading it away from the true idea of God as Love. It has practically divorced it from any proper concept of the law of kindness, and so left it free to look for the manifestation of God in innumerable so-called material laws, which Science proves to be not laws at all, but simply the erroneous concepts of mortals.

Only through the activity of the law of kindness can humanity ever understand rightly the punishment and forgiveness of sin. So long as malice and hatred are believed in and indulged, the chastening influence of divine Love cannot be practically understood, and humanity will be found trying to conquer one wrong with another, substituting human devices for the divine corrective. If all religious teachers could but grasp the practical import of God’s forgiveness of sin, they would cheerfully abandon their efforts to frighten people into the kingdom of heaven, and would gladly undertake to prove to suffering and sin-sick humanity that the heavenly kingdom lies within the consciousness of every individual, by recourse to the law of kindness through which divine Love operates spiritually to destroy the evidence of sin, disease, and death. The moment the individual grasps the right idea of divine Love, who is “not willing that any should perish,” but that all should come to a knowledge of the truth, he begins to partake of a new sense of life. Old things pass away, and he has a new and higher standard of thought. Many cases of healing have resulted from destroying the patient’s fear and perverted sense of eternal punishment. Only through the law of kindness can the frightened sense of earth’s countless sufferers be destroyed, and Love’s sweet “peace, be still” be ushered into consciousness. The individual who imagines that God is conscious of anger and hatred may believe himself to be upright, honorable, and just; but without the law of kindness to lead him to God for spiritual wisdom, strength, and understanding, the counterfeit claim of human selfishness is apt to manifest itself in a hundred different ways.

The home is not the only place where love and kindness should hold sway. They are needed just as much in the world of business. The close of each day’s work in thousands of business establishments often records the prevalence of dishonesty, greed, and injustice, of selfishness, sensuality, and even cruelty, all because the law of kindness is not understood. Until this law is understood in the light of Christian Science “man’s inhumanity to man” will continue to permeate to a greater or less degree every human activity. Not until it becomes practically operative will the mighty conflict between capital and labor cease. Not until employer and employe both grasp the all-satisfying idea of God as infinite Love, whereby they can acknowledge the universal brotherhood of man, will the labor problem be solved. The various social, civil, and economic problems will find no satisfactory solution except through the law of kindness, the only law that uncovers and defines the unreality and lawlessness of human selfishness and leads thought to the God who is Love. Lord Burleigh once said, “Kindness infuses the greatest energy into both body and soul, and creates that spirit of self-abandonment to the general good which annihilates selfish considerations and binds all classes in the bonds of peaceful and holy brotherhood.”
